A plea deal appears to be in the works for Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students in November 2022. An attorney for the family of Kaylee Goncalves, one of the victims, confirmed to CBS News that they received a proposed plea deal for Kohberger. A lawyer for Kohberger's parents said the full plea deal was not accepted, though a portion of it may have been. The lawyer did not provide any further details.

Kohberger was charged with four counts of murder in the fatal stabbings of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, who were killed at a home in Moscow, Idaho, during the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022.

The murders terrorized the community, and for weeks, the hunt for a suspect was shrouded in mystery. Kohberger was arrested six weeks later at his parents' home in Pennsylvania. According to a police affidavit, DNA evidence linked him to a knife sheath found at the crime scene.

At the time of his arrest, Kohberger was a Ph.D. criminology student and teaching assistant at Washington State University's Pullman campus, which is about a 15-minute drive from Moscow, Idaho.

Kohberger had been fighting the charges, which could carry the death penalty. His trial was expected to begin in August, following several delays.

After news broke of the plea deal, a post on the Goncalves family's Facebook page said, "We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho. They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected. We appreciate all your love and support."

In a separate post, the family said they attended a meeting with prosecutors. Aubrie Goncalves, the youngest member of the family, was not able to attend the meeting and said in a written statement, "The introduction of this plea deal, just weeks before the scheduled trial, is both shocking and cruel." She continued, "Bryan Kohberger facing a life in prison means he would still get to speak, form relationships, and engage with the world. Meanwhile, our loved ones have been silenced forever."

In a formal statement, the Goncalvez family said, "The Latah County Prosecutor's Office's treatment of our family during this process is something I wouldn't wish on anyone."

The family added that "it was no shock how the Latah County Prosecutor's Office mishandled the plea deal. They vaguely mentioned a possible plea on Friday, without seeking our input, and presented the plea on Sunday. Latah County should be ashamed of its Prosecutor's Office."

The trial was originally going to be held in Latah County, where the murders occurred, but Latah County District Judge John Judge later ordered the trial be moved over concerns the media coverage and statements from local officials would make it impossible for Kohberger to receive a fair trial. The Idaho Supreme Court moved the proceedings to Boise.

Kohberger's defense team had previously tried to remove the death penalty as a possible sentence if he was convicted, but Ada County Judge Steven Hippler denied their motions back in November 2024.

Among the evidence prosecutors were planning to present was Kohberger's Amazon purchase history showing he bought a Ka-Bar knife with sheath and sharpener, which they claimed matched the sheath found at the crime scene. Prosecutors also claimed "touch DNA" matching DNA taken from Kohberger was found on the sheath. The defense tried to exclude the touch DNA evidence, but Hippler denied that request.

Prosecutors were also planning to present surveillance video of Kohberger's car and cellphone data that they said tied him to the vicinity of the killings.

Last week, the judge denied a motion by Kohberger's lawyers, who were seeking to argue that four "alternate perpetrators" could have committed the murders. The judge called it "rank speculation" and said "nothing links these individuals to the homicides."

Bryan Kohberger, the 30-year-old accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students in their apartment in 2022, has agreed to a plea deal in his quadruple murder case, skirting the death penalty and bringing a possible end to the years-long legal proceedings against him.

The deal consisted of pleading guilty to four counts of murder in exchange for the government not pursuing the death penalty, a person familiar with the details confirmed to CNN. Shanon Gray, attorney for the family of victim Kaylee Goncalves, also confirmed the deal to CNN.

A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday. Kohberger was slated to go on trial in August, and prosecutors indicated they would pursue the death penalty.

The deal was announced with a letter sent to the victims' families, according to the Idaho Statesman and the Goncalves family, who described the announcement as "very unexpected" and said they were "furious at the State of Idaho" in a post on Facebook.

"They have failed us. Please give us some time," reads the post.

In a statement shared with CNN, the Goncalves family said that they "weren't even called about the plea; we received an email with a letter attached."

"After more than two years, this is how it concludes with a secretive deal and a hurried effort to close the case without any input from the victims' families on the plea's details," reads the statement. They said victims' families had been "treated as opponents from the outset."

Gray, their attorney, said, "The issue is they are trying to cram the plea for July 2, only giving the families a day to get to Boise."

Lengthy legal battle

The past week has seen the options for Kohberger's legal defense dwindle. Last week, the judge rejected a bid from Kohberger's defense to delay the trial and dismissed the defense's request to propose an "alternate perpetrator" theory. Defense lawyers had hoped to suggest that one of four alternate perpetrators killed the students, but the judge ruled nothing but "rank speculation" linked the proposed alternate perpetrators to the crimes. The judge had also previously barred Kohberger's defense from entering an official alibi – since no one could vouch for where he was during the time of the killings.

Kohberger's trial date was pushed back multiple times due to disputes about evidence and witnesses, and saw a change of venue from Latah County to the state capital of Boise. A not guilty plea was previously entered on Kohberger's behalf. Last year, the Goncalves family expressed their frustration at the incessant delays, saying the case had turned into a "hamster wheel of motions, hearings, and delayed decisions."

The letter specifies Kohberger will likely be sentenced to life in prison if he pleads guilty as expected, according to the Idaho Statesman. It also requires him to waive his right to appeal, the Statesman reported.

"We cannot fathom the toll that this case has taken on your family," read the letter, signed by Moscow Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson, according to the Idaho Statesman. "This resolution is our sincere attempt to seek justice for your family. This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction appeals."

Kohberger, previously a PhD student of criminology at Washington State University, was charged with killing the four students in January 2023. Authorities say Ethan Chapin, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, were fatally stabbed in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022 in Moscow, Idaho. CNN has reached out to the families of Chapin, Kernodle, and Mogen.

An assistant at the Kootenai County Public Defender's office told CNN "no comment" about the news of the plea deal. The office of Thompson, the Moscow Prosecuting Attorney, told CNN they could not comment due to the wide-ranging gag order in the case, which prohibits prosecutors, defense lawyers, attorneys for victims' families and witnesses from saying anything publicly, aside from what is already in the public record.

The killings shook the small college town of Moscow, Idaho, inspiring fear as law enforcement spent weeks searching for a suspect. The harrowing details of the crimes and years-long legal proceedings against Kohberger have also been the subject of public scrutiny. Kohberger appeared to have little connection to the victims.

Kohberger was arrested over a month after the killings in Pennsylvania, after forensic DNA testing from trash outside the Kohberger family home gave Idaho law enforcement the probable cause to arrest him.

Prosecutors had submitted a variety of evidence they say ties Kohberger to the crimes, including DNA found on a knife sheath on a bed close to Mogen. The single source profile was determined to be male and matched to Kohberger through investigative genetic genealogy, the process of taking unknown DNA to public databases and finding relatives that share the profile.

His defense attorneys have said he has autism in part of their push to get the death penalty off the table. They have said he was out driving alone during the night of the killings.

Four students killed overnight

The four university students were found dead on November 13, 2022 after a Saturday night out. Investigators believe the four roommates were killed sometime between 4 a.m. and 4:25 a.m.

Accounts of what unfolded that night in Moscow have emerged from two of the surviving roommates, who were both expected to testify at trial. One survivor, Dylan Mortensen, said she was woken overnight by strange noises in their off-campus house.

She told investigators she saw a masked man with "bushy eyebrows" in the home, according to an affidavit.

When their roommates didn't respond to their text messages in the morning, Mortensen and the other survivor, Bethany Funke, called 911 at around noon, records show.

Heavy breathing and crying can be heard in audio of the 911 call as the surviving roommates pass the phone between them and what sounds like two other people, answering the dispatcher in fragmented responses.

"Something has happened in our house, we don't know what," one of the roommates says.

On the call they reported 20-year-old Kernodle unconscious, telling the dispatcher she had come home drunk the night before. "She's not waking up," one of them says.

Police arrived to find Kernodle and Chapin dead on the floor of the second floor. Upstairs, Goncalves and Mogen were dead in one of the beds with visible stab wounds.

"They were sons, daughters, siblings, and friends—real people with real dreams," reads another statement posted to Facebook by the Goncalves family, attributed to Kaylee's sister Aubrie, after the deal was announced.

"They deserve to be remembered for who they were in life, not only for the tragedy of their deaths. But before that can truly happen, they deserve justice," it added.

Turkish police detained at least four cartoonists on Monday accused of drawing and distributing a cartoon that authorities and protesters say is a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed and Moses.

The cartoon, published in a political satire magazine, shows what appears to be a Muslim and a Jewish man, both with wings and halos, shaking hands and greeting each other as bombs fall below.

The cartoon went viral on social media four days after it was published. Hundreds of people took to Istanbul's main tourist street, chanting "Allah is Great" and calling for sharia law in protest. Turkish authorities quickly condemned the magazine.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya called the cartoon a provocation and said those "who dare to do this will be held accountable before the law." Yerlikaya said the cartoon was not protected by freedom of expression or freedom of speech.

Fahrettin Altun, the head communications for the Turkish Presidency, called it a "vile attack on our beliefs and values."

The country's Justice Ministry announced an investigation had been launched into the incident under Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code for the crime of "publicly insulting religious values."

LeMan, the weekly political satire magazine known for irreverent comics similar to French Charlie Hebdo, released a statement saying their cartoon was not depicting the Islamic prophet.

"This cartoon is not a caricature of the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh). In the work, the name Mohammed is fictionalized as belonging to a Muslim person killed in Israel's bombardments. There are more than 200 million people named Mohammed in the Islamic world. The work does not refer to the Prophet Mohammed in any way," the magazine said.

"By highlighting a murdered Muslim, the aim was to highlight the righteousness of the oppressed Muslim people, with no intention whatsoever of belittling religious values. We reject the stigma imposed on us, as there is no depiction of our Prophet," LeMan said.

"To interpret the cartoon in such a way requires extreme malice," the magazine added, but also offered an apology to any readers who may have been offended.

As protesters took to the streets, the Interior Ministry released videos of cartoonists being detained in their homes, barefoot and handcuffed by police with captions such as "You will not escape from our security forces or from justice."

Protesters were seen kicking the doors of the magazine offices in central Istanbul. In one video a demonstrator shouts, "For our Prophet, we would give our lives and take lives; no one can insult our Prophet."

The crowd also performed a nighttime prayer. Within hours, Istanbul's governor Davut Gul announced that all four people who were wanted for the cartoon were in police custody.

Gul did not say if any demonstrators were detained but said in a statement, "It has been determined that some individuals mingling among the protesters have engaged in provocative actions. It is of great importance that the protesting groups disperse to prevent harm to our citizens and to maintain public order."

Some groups have called for further protests against the magazine on Tuesday.

Kennedy Beaver has been going to therapy sessions at least twice a week after she was diagnosed with Noonan syndrome, a genetic condition that stunts development.

The 6-year-old from North Carolina is among 600,000 people in the state who could lose access to healthcare as Congress is poised to approve major cuts to Medicaid funding proposed in President Trump's so-called "big, beautiful bill," according to according to the state's Medicaid office.

"For her, that's short stature, poor growth, low muscle tone," her mother, Marilyn, described Kennedy's condition in an interview with CBS News. "So with that, we became eligible for something called the CAP/C waiver through Medicaid."

North Carolina's Community Alternatives Program for Children pays for most of the treatments and medications for patients younger than 20 who have significant medical needs. If the Beavers didn't have CAP/C, the family says they would be paying over $4,000 a month for treatments and medications — even with private health insurance coverage.

"This is our medication that, without the Medicaid coverage, would be $3,200 a month, because our primary insurance has denied us," Marilyn said. The family says they also fear that if the proposal on Capitol Hill becomes law, they may have to go back to rationing Kennedy's treatment.

North Carolina Medicaid Deputy Secretary Jay Ludlam says the cut that's being proposed at the federal level will "at some point affect the entire program."

The state's Medicaid program oversees more than 3 million people who currently receive the healthcare benefits. State officials say if federal funding falls short, the CAP/C program could be on the chopping block.

"When you take $700 billion out of Medicaid nationally ... there's no way to really do that without people losing coverage, without having to change the benefits and the coverage that people get," Ludlam said.

When asked what she would tell lawmakers in Congress if she had the opportunity to speak with them, Marilyn said they should make changes without cutting services.

"It's fixing the healthcare system so that everyone in the country can get a level of care that meets their needs," she said.

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's governor on Monday signed five bills cracking down on the rampant use of illegal fireworks in the islands after a massive explosion at a New Year's party killed six people and severely burned more than a dozen others.

The new laws take effect immediately. Police will be authorized to issue $300 tickets to those who shoot off fireworks, while repeat offenders and those whose actions cause serious injury or death could get prison time for felony crimes.

"If (a) firework goes off and you have it illegally and you blow somebody up, honestly, you're gonna go to jail for 20 years," Gov. Josh Green said at a bill signing ceremony. "No joke. So don't do it."

State and county officials have long struggled to contain illegal fireworks in Hawaii, where it's become common for people to launch professional-grade aerial explosives from the streets in front of their homes.

The reforms aim to allow police to quickly address minor infractions and focus their investigations on higher-level cases.

"We have to, once and for all, stop this for the safety of our children and the people we love," Green said.

He urged people to enjoy public fireworks shows instead.

Another measure appropriates $2 million to the state Department of Law Enforcement for an explosives and firearms laboratory and $500,000 for undercover fireworks sting operations.

Over New Year's, crates of illegal fireworks ignited and set off a chain of explosions during a party in a Honolulu residential neighborhood.

The injured filled the state's lone burn care unit, forcing the transport of some victims to Arizona for treatment.

Authorities seized 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of unused fireworks from the scene. Police have so far arrested 10 people in connection with the explosion. Authorities accused them of reckless endangering, endangering the welfare of a minor and multiple fireworks offenses.

The Honolulu prosecutor's office said its investigation into the allegations is ongoing.

Washington — A federal magistrate judge said Monday that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador and then was returned to the United States to face criminal charges of human smuggling, will remain in federal custody until at least mid-July.

Abrego Garcia's lawyers had asked the judge Friday to delay his release, warning that the Trump administration had made conflicting statements about whether he will be deported after he is released ahead of a trial.

The brief order from U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes is the latest development in the case involving Abrego Garcia, whose removal to El Salvador in March emerged as a flashpoint in President Trump's immigration agenda and promise of mass deportations of immigrants in the U.S. unlawfully.

Abrego Garcia was indicted by a federal grand jury on two charges of human smuggling in late May, after which the government returned him to the U.S. to face federal prosecution. He has pleaded not guilty.

His return came weeks after a federal judge in Maryland ordered the Trump administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia's release from Salvadoran custody, which was affirmed by the Supreme Court. A U.S. immigration official had acknowledged Abrego Garcia's deportation to El Salvador was an administrative error, as he had been granted a legal status in 2019 that prevented the Department of Homeland Security from removing Abrego Garcia to his home country because of likely persecution by local gangs.

After Abrego Garcia was brought back to the U.S. to face the human smuggling offenses, the Justice Department requested he remain detained while awaiting trial. But Holmes earlier this month rejected that request and said he should be granted pretrial release.

The Justice Department appealed that decision, and a U.S. district judge set a hearing for July 16 on the request to revoke Holmes' release order.

But during a hearing last week to review the conditions of Abrego Garcia's release, lawyers for the Salvadoran man and the Justice Department acknowledged that he would likely be detained by the Department of Homeland Security and deported swiftly after being released from Justice Department custody, which would interfere with his criminal proceeding.

Holmes put off issuing her order of release, and Abrego Garcia's lawyers asked her to delay it further because of what they said are conflicting statements about whether he would be removed to a third country — one other than El Salvador — if detained by immigration authorities while awaiting trial.

Federal prosecutors did not oppose the request.

"A short delay will prevent the government from removing Mr. Abrego and allow time for the government to provide reliable information concerning its intentions," Abrego Garcia's lawyers wrote in a filing to Holmes.

The magistrate judge agreed to the request and said Abrego Garcia will remain in the custody of U.S. Marshals to allow for the July 16 hearing and a decision on the government's bid to revoke his release order.

Holmes said Abrego Garcia should be held separately from others waiting or serving sentences and given a "reasonable opportunity" to privately meet with his lawyers.

Abbott Elementary was renewed for an impressive fifth season in January, but Quinta Brunson and some of the cast have started to wonder about life out of school.

"We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans," Brunson, who created and stars in the show, told Bustle in a new interview. "That being said, I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things."

She continued, "Right now, I'm receiving scripts, and waiting for that moment that feels like, 'Oh man, this is exactly what I've been looking for.' Abbott has been so successful, and I want to use that success to get other people's projects off the ground."

For example, she told the outlet, "I'm always interested in playing against type. I think that's any actor's dream. Right now my type is 'Janine' and 'teacher.' I'm looking forward to moving away from that a little bit."

The ABC comedy, which debuted in 2021 and was inspired by Brunson's mother's 40 years as a public school teacher, focuses on the staff at an underfunded public school in Philadelphia. Brunson costars on the Emmy-winning show with a cast that includes Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, Janelle James, William Stanford Davis, and Chris Perfetti.

Brunson explained her mantra and approach to being the face of the show to Bustle.

"People used to tell me at the beginning of this that the No. 1 on the call sheet sets the tone, and the producer sets the tone — and I'm both of those roles," she said. "I understand now, after doing this for four years, how important it was that I set the tone that I did when we first started."

"Sometimes it's as simple as I'm the first one in the morning," she added, "and the way I carry myself in the morning can determine how the rest of the set runs, not only as an actor, but as the creator of the show. Rosie O'Donnell wrote in an Instagram post that she was sickened by Jeff Bezos' lavish wedding to Lauren Sanchez in Venice, Italy. The days-long event featured a ton of A-list celebrities, from Sydney Sweeney to Leonardo DiCaprio, and prompted widespread backlash and protests from Venice locals.

"The Bezos' wedding. It turned my stomach seeing all these billionaires gathering in the gross excess of it all. The show of it," O'Donnell wrote before calling out Oprah for her attendance at the event.

Oprah attended the Bezos wedding with longtime friend Gayle King, who is well-acquainted with Sanchez after their space flight together earlier this year courtesy of Bezos' Blue Origin company. O'Donnell expanded on her anti-Bezos thoughts in a post on her Substack page.

Other celebrities who criticized the Bezos wedding include Oscar winner Charlize Theron, who made a quip about Bezos' wedding guests while hosting her annual party for the Africa Outreach Project. She told attendees: "I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. But that's ok because they suck and we're cool."

O'Donnell made headlines earlier this year for revealing she fled America after the re-election of Donald Trump. She currently lives in Ireland and told Variety she has no plans on returning to the U.S. until Trump is out of office.

"With the current political climate, when would it be safe to come back with my child?" she asked. "I'm not going to push it before this administration is completely finished, and hopefully held accountable for their crimes."

DC Studios head James Gunn may have revealed his first choice to play Wonder Woman.

In a recent interview with Extra, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" director discussed "Hit Man" star Adria Arjona and teased where he sees her fitting in to his revamped DC Universe.

"I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out [and thought], 'He just followed her, that means she's Wonder Woman,'" Gunn shared. "She'd be a great Wonder Woman, by the way."

"She was in a movie that I made seven years ago," he added. "We've been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn't just follow her."

Earlier in June, Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that a new feature film following Wonder Woman is "being written right now." He added that the movie would come in addition to an HBO series about Wonder Woman's home of Themyscira. Gunn said that the TV project is "slow moving, but it's moving."

The Wonder Woman movie is only one of many feature films in development at DC Studios. "Superman," written and directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, is set to release in July. "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" is scheduled for release in June 2026, directed by Craig Gillespie. "Clayface," a horror film and origin story of the titular Batman villain, is also in the works and set for release in September 2026. James Watkins is set to direct with a script from Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini.

The actor, 81, and his 2-year-old daughter, Gia, met The Wiggles before their New York City concert. While posing with the children's band, De Niro sweetly holds his daughter up in one photo as they sit between two of the members.

Other photos show De Niro, Gia and the toddler's mom, Tiffany Chen, sitting together amongst a few bubbles, getting ready to watch the show.

The Wiggles also shared a few photos on their Instagram from their time with De Niro, including a video of the actor and his daughter shaking hands with some of the Australian singers. Later, De Niro can be seen playing around in the bubbles with his toddler daughter and listening as group sang a few tunes.

"It was such a thrill to spend some time with the legendary Robert De Niro and his family before our concert here in New York City ✨," The Wiggles wrote in their Instagram caption.

The Academy Award winner has seven children. De Niro and his first wife, Diahnne Abbott, are parents to daughter Drena, 53, and son Raphael, 48. In 1995, he welcomed twin sons Julian and Aaron, 29, with his former girlfriend, model and actress Toukie Smith. De Niro shares son Elliot, 26, and daughter Helen Grace, 13, with his ex-wife, Grace Hightower. In April 2023, the proud father welcomed a baby girl, Gia, with Tiffany Chen.

Back in February, De Niro first shared that he watches The Wiggles and other kids' television series with his youngest daughter while speaking with Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2's The Scott Mills Breakfast Show.

At the time, the Zero Day actor and executive producer noted that he doesn't watch as many movies as he should because he's busy watching the news or TV shows with Gia.

"I just want to keep up, but I watch current events, if you will news [and] stuff like that," he told Mills. "Now I watch, with my little girl, The Wiggles and Ms. Rachel."

"I didn't know of them until I started seeing them and my daughter loves to watch them," he added. "But they're great!"

Shortly after welcoming his youngest daughter, De Niro reflected on being a father of seven.

While chatting with Access Hollywood at the premiere of his new film About My Father in May 2023, the actor opened up about being a dad and shared his wisdom about being a good father.

"Sometimes I don't think people really know what being a good father is, you know you have a responsibility, but it's a mystery, it's a lot of excitement but scary and you do your best," he said.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Bryan Kohberger has agreed to plead guilty to murder in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty, an attorney for one victim's family said Monday.

Here's what to know about the case and the recent developments:

Who were the victims and who is the suspect?

Kohberger, 30, is accused in the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen at a home near campus in Moscow, Idaho, on Nov. 13, 2022. Autopsies showed the four were all likely asleep when they were attacked, some had defensive wounds and each was stabbed multiple times.

Kohberger, then a criminal justice graduate student at nearby Washington State University, was arrested in Pennsylvania weeks after the killings. Investigators said they matched his DNA to genetic material recovered from a knife sheath found at the crime scene.

What has happened so far in the case?

Kohberger has been charged with four counts of murder in the stabbings. Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

When initially asked to enter a plea in 2023, Kohberger stood silent, prompting the judge to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf.

The northern Idaho farming community of about 25,000 people was rocked by the killings and hadn't seen a homicide in about five years. The trial was scheduled to move to Boise after the defense expressed concerns that Kohberger couldn't get a fair trial where the killings occurred.

What do we know about the plea deal?

Kohberger's trial was set to start in August and was expected to last more than three months. An attorney for the family of Goncalves confirmed that families of the victims received news of the plea deal in a letter from prosecutors Monday.

"We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho," Goncalves' family wrote in a Facebook post. "They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected."

In the letter to families, obtained by ABC News, prosecutors said Kohberger's lawyers approached them seeking a plea deal. The defense team had previously tried but failed to have the death penalty stricken as a possible punishment, including arguing that Kohberger's autism diagnosis made him less culpable.

The prosecutors said they met with available family members last week, including some members of the Goncalves family, before deciding to make Kohberger an offer.

"This resolution is our sincere attempt to seek justice for your family," the letter said. "This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction, appeals. Your viewpoints weighed heavily in our decision-making process, and we hope that you may come to appreciate why we believe this resolution is in the best interest of justice."

What did prosecutors plan to show at trial?

Court filings have shown that prosecutors intended to introduce evidence including Kohberger's "click history" at Amazon.com with the purchased of a Ka-Bar knife — a military-style, fixed-blade knife — along with a sheath and sharpener months before the killings. A Ka-Bar knife sheath was found next to one of the victims.

Prosecutors had also said they also intended to introduce what appears to be a self-portrait Kohberger took on his phone just hours after the killings. In it, he is smiling and giving a thumbs-up gesture.

A roommate who was in the home that morning, sleeping and intoxicated, told police she woke up and saw a man she didn't know — someone with "bushy eyebrows" who was wearing a face mask, prosecutors have said.

No motive has emerged for the killings, nor is it clear why the attacker spared two roommates who were in the home at the time. Authorities have said cellphone data and surveillance video shows that Kohberger visited the victims' neighborhood at least a dozen times before the four students were slain.

In a court filing, Kohberger's lawyers said he was on a long drive by himself around the time the four were killed.

What's next?

A change of plea hearing was set for Wednesday, but the family has asked prosecutors to delay it to give them more time to travel to Boise, Gray said.

In Idaho, judges may reject plea agreements, though such moves are rare. If a judge rejects a plea agreement, the defendant is allowed to withdraw the guilty plea.

The court has issued a gag order that has largely kept attorneys, investigators and others from speaking publicly about the investigation or trial.
