Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that typically first appears as a transparent bump on the skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. It most often develops on the head and neck due to exposure to the sun, and limiting exposure to sunlight (including proactive use of sunscreen) can help prevent risk of basal cell carcinoma.
Other factors that can increase the risk of skin cancer include fair skin, radiation therapy, immune-suppressing drugs, and heightened exposure to arsenic. The condition typically occurs in older adults because it can take decades to develop, though it is becoming more common for patients in their 20s and 30s.

Skin cancer isn't the only medical condition that Ramsay has dealt with recently. The acclaimed chef was involved in a serious cycling accident in 2024. "I bent down, started tightening up my helmet, and the whole thing had split. Then I was trying to look, and I could just see a blur of vision and blood everywhere," he told *Men's Health U.K*. "I honestly thought I was going to pass out."

The *Kitchen Nightmares* star also revealed that he was diagnosed with arthritis in 2021 when he received X-rays after knee surgery. "I'd never heard that word in relation to me before," Ramsay told *The Sun*. "[The doctor] told me I needed to start slowing down. It was a case of, 'Imagine you've got 1.5 million steps to run over the next 30 years… pace yourself.'"
