The MTV VMAs are (rightfully) obsessed with Mariah Carey and her legendary music video output.

The "Honey" singer is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award at MTV's 2025 Video Music Awards, which celebrates artists for outstanding contributions and profound impact on music videos and pop culture. Carey will accept the award and celebrate the achievement with a career-spanning medley of her biggest hits at the Sept. 7 ceremony, live from New York's UBS Arena.

This achievement marks a full circle moment for Carey, who last appeared on the VMAs stage 20 years ago, when she presented the very same award to LL Cool J in 1997. The rapper is coincidentally set to host this year's ceremony.

Carey's Vanguard award is also notable because, despite being a nine-time VMA nominee, the singer never won a Moonman (now called a Moon Person) statuette.

Rest assured, the legendary pop and R&B singer certainly isn't lacking when it comes to accolades. Throughout her career, Carey has collected 6 Grammy Awards, 14 Billboard Music Awards, and 10 American Music Awards, just to name a few.

She also has a long history with the VMAs, having made her debut on the telecast in 1991 with a performance of her chart-topping single, "Emotions." Eight years later, she joined Whitney Houston to open the show with an iconic pop culture moment that saw the duo "accidentally" wear the same dress.

Memorable videos from Carey's discography include "Heartbreaker," "Obsessed," "Touch My Body," "Breakdown," 'All I Want For Christmas," and "#Beautiful." Ahead of her 16th studio album, Carey recently released a video for her new single, "Type Dangerous." Her album, *Here for It All*, is due out Sept. 26.

The Video Vanguard Award, named after Michael Jackson, went to Katy Perry last year. Previous winners include Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, David Bowie, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Shakira, and Rihanna. The Beatles and *A Hard Day's Night* director Richard Lester won the award at the first VMAs in 1984.

The 2025 VMAs is also touting performances from Sabrina Carpenter, Ricky Martin (who will receive the VMAs' first-ever Latin Icon Award), Busta Rhymes, J Balvin, Alex Warren and Sombr. As for the awards to be presented, Lady Gaga leads the pack with 12 nods, the most nominations at this year's ceremony. Bruno Mars follows closely with 11 nominations, and Kendrick Lamar behind that with 10.

The VMAs will air live in all time zones on CBS and MTV, and stream live on Paramount +, at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT on Sunday, Sept. 7.**
