- Joy Behar reacted to Donald Trump and other political figures complaining about Jimmy Kimmel.

- She said that "autocrats" and "dictators" also "go after comedians."

- "They call themselves strong men, but they actually are very weak men," she said.

Joy Behar isn't letting the impact of Jimmy Kimmel's suspension from *The View*'s parent network, ABC, slip away quietly in the wake of his Tuesday evening return to the channel.

The 82-year-old comedian kicked off Wednesday's live *View* edition by celebrating Kimmel's return to* Jimmy Kimmel Live! *after a week-long suspension spurred by comments he made about Charlie Kirk's alleged assassin. She also criticized those who called for his ousting from the air, particularly Donald Trump, who criticized Kimmel at length amid the controversy.

Behar compared Kimmel's detractors to "autocrats" and "dictators" who "go after comedians," she said, citing Vladimir Putin and government leaders in Iran and Turkey.

"They don't like a comedian. Why? Because comedians tell the truth, make you laugh, and it resonates with you. They don't like that," Behar continued. "They call themselves strong men, but they actually are very weak men, because they can't take a joke."

Elsewhere on *The View*, cohost Sara Haines praised Kimmel's Tuesday evening opening monologue, saying that "comedians are here to remind us that we need to hold governments accountable" and that "we need to be able to be equal opportunity offenders" when criticizing those in power.

Panelist Sunny Hostin, legal expert and former federal prosecutor, highlighted Kimmel pointing out that the acts against him were "un-American, because freedom of speech is the bedrock of our democracy."**

Alyssa Farah Griffin, the show's conservative seat-holder who used to work for Trump at the White House, praised Kimmel for highlighting his faith and addressing Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, who publicly forgave his alleged killer during her husband's highly publicized funeral.

Finally, moderator Whoopi Goldberg sent* The View* to a commercial break by encouraging Americans to speak up for what they believe in, and not to fear retribution.

"It doesn't matter whether you're a comedian or a regular old person who goes about their day. You have every right, it's your birthright as a American. If you're not happy as an American, you're allowed to say it," the 69-year-old said. "That's part of what makes you an American, it's part of what makes us different from anybody else. We acknowledge all of those Republicans who recognize that it's not a right or left right, it's the right of all Americans. If it goes for us on the left or middle, it also goes for you on the right. We want to make sure that everybody can still say and be who they want to be when they're here, when they're American."

After Disney, the owner of ABC, announced that Kimmel would return, Trump blasted the company over the move.

"I can't believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back," Trump said on his social platform. "Something happened between then and now because his audience is GONE, and his 'talent' was never there. Why would they want someone back who does so poorly, who's not funny, and who puts the Network in jeopardy by playing 99% positive Democrat GARBAGE."

In addition to Kimmel, *The View *has also become a target for government figures, including Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr, who said in July that there may be "consequences" for the liberal-leaning show over what he perceived to be a media bias.

*The View* airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
