Ever since he first picked up a tennis racket, João Fonseca has shown a penchant for power – even if it came with mixed results.

"I was the kind of kid that destroyed the ball," says Fonseca. "Sometimes, it would go into the fence; sometimes, it would go straight to the floor; and then, sometimes, we're doing a winner."

That approach – fearless, furious and unrestrained – has stayed with the Brazilian into his professional career, and today, his ripping forehand is one of the most breathtaking sights in men's tennis.

Few players can match the 19-year-old Fonseca when it comes to raw power, particularly on the forehand wing. This not-so-subtle, not-so-secret weapon has guided him to two ATP Tour titles this year, including in the Swiss city of Basel last week.

There, Fonseca thumped 29 winners to see off Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final, while his average forehand speed was clocked at 81 miles per hour. For comparison, top players usually average around 75.

"I think my coach was really the first one that said: 'Keep with this aggression,'" Fonseca tells CNN Sports about his all-out approach. "'Keep doing this, but at the same time, let's work with being more solid.'

"During these last years, I understood that you can't hit the ball hard every time … Sometimes, it's a stupid idea, of course, but sometimes, it's good to be aggressive, to be courageous and have confidence in your shots."

Lifting the title in Basel saw Fonseca become the third-youngest ATP 500 winner since the format was introduced in 2009, as well as the tournament's youngest winner since Jim Courier in 1989.

Still a teenager, Fonseca's potential is huge, his freakish power likely to become more of a threat as he develops and refines his game. To some, he is destined to join Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner – by far and away the standout players in men's tennis this year – at the very top of the game.

"The Brazilian Blaster (Fonseca) is a generational talent as I said 2 years ago and will be right there someday with the Italian Flamethrower (Sinner) and Spanish Magician (Alcaraz)," Rick Macci, the former coach to Serena Williams, wrote on X recently.

Those players, Macci added, will "create a new big three" to replace Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Davidovich Fokina spoke along the same lines during his runner-up speech in Basel, telling Fonseca that he is "for sure going to be the next Nole (Djokovic) to beat Carlos and Jannik."

After winning last year's Next Gen ATP Finals title – a tournament featuring the world's best players under 20 – Fonseca turned heads at the Australian Open in January with a straight-sets victory over ninth seed Andrey Rublev.

He followed that up by winning the Argentina Open a month later, becoming the second-youngest South American to win an ATP title in the Open Era.

But Fonseca's progress hasn't been exponential. He failed to progress past the third round of a grand slam this year, perhaps a surprise after the enormous promise he showed at the start of the season.

The victory in Basel, however, reaffirmed his status as one of the most explosive talents in the game, with Fonseca climbing 18 spots up the rankings to No. 28. That puts him well on track to fulfill his self-ascribed objectives for next year.

"I think one of my goals is to be a seed, top 32 (at a grand slam)," says Fonseca. "It's my personal goal. I'm working a lot to do it … let's see how it goes."

To get to this level, Fonseca had to spend his formative years building a bond with tennis. As a young player, the game would make him feel restless, and he often found himself chasing big, haymaking shots on the court. He was even more impatient off it, unable to watch a full match without losing interest.

That changed around 2019, when Fonseca sat absorbed as Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in a Wimbledon final lasting four hours and 57 minutes – the longest final in the tournament's history.

A self-proclaimed Federer superfan, that match hurt Fonseca. As he started to enjoy tennis as a spectator, he would often watch the "Big 3" play out match after memorable match on the sport's biggest stages, but it was the Swiss star who captivated him the most.

"He's my idol," Fonseca confesses. Which goes some way to explaining why he suddenly found himself a sweaty, nervous wreck before meeting Federer for the first time in September.

"We had a nice chat, about 10 minutes, and we talked a little bit about life, tour, how it is to live in Brazil and be far from home," says Fonseca, adding: "He's a super nice guy. You see these amazing players, these legends, as untouchable (and think): this guy is different. But no, he's just a human being like us, super cool.

"It was a very important moment; it's going to be in my mind for my whole life."

It's likely that the two might cross paths again, particularly given that Fonseca is sponsored by On – the sportswear company in which Federer has invested and helped with product development. The Brazilian was only 16 when he was signed by On and earmarked as a star in the making, joining a roster that includes six-time grand slam winner Iga Świątek and world No. 7 Ben Shelton.

Several years earlier, Fonseca had made the decision to focus his sporting endeavors solely on tennis, not long after a soccer injury had left him sidelined for months.

Like most kids growing up in Rio de Janeiro, soccer was, and still is, one of his great loves, even though his playing days have long since passed.

"I was a good level," says Fonseca. "I'm a lefty leg, I had some skills, but nothing serious. I wouldn't be professional or whatever. Fortunately, I stayed with tennis."

After reaching the quarterfinals of last year's Rio Open aged 17, Fonseca decided to forego his college eligibility – he was holding a place at the University of Virginia – and turn professional.

Since then, his march up the world rankings has been steady, quickly earning him an army of dedicated fans. Fonseca's matches are some of the loudest on tour, and regardless of whether he's playing in Brazil or further afield, yellow-and-green-clad spectators are guaranteed whenever he's on a tennis court.

It's taken time, Fonseca admits, to grow accustomed to playing in front of such raucous crowds.

"At the beginning, I was super nervous," he says. "I needed to win, and there are people watching me, there are people cheering for me. The culture of Brazil is super loud, a lot of people supporting, I'll say a little bit because of football.

"I got used a lot to the crowd. Nowadays, I love playing with the crowd. I love them supporting me. I love that sometimes I'm in a bad situation in the match and they're still supporting me, still cheering and motivating me.

"I was more like a shy guy," he adds, "and now I'm loving it."

Playing in loud matches at big tournaments is likely to be a mainstay of Fonseca's career. He is slowly accumulating more experience against the world's best players but hasn't yet faced Djokovic – he's hopeful of doing so before the Serb, now 38, retires – nor has he played either Alcaraz or Sinner.

Those kinds of matches might become a regular occurrence should Fonseca, armed with that ferocious forehand, continue his march up the rankings. For now, he is watching closely as two players just a few years his senior rule over men's tennis, sharing the past eight grand slams equally between them.

One day, Fonseca might be in a position to challenge their duopoly.

"What they're doing is amazing," he says of Alcaraz and Sinner. "They're winning every tournament that they play.

"They motivate all the other players to put more work in day by day, and try to be with them, try to win more tournaments, try to win matches, be more consistent. Hopefully, in the future, I will be with them, playing and competing in finals. But one step at a time, and let's put in the work."

The rematch of last season's AFC championship game is here.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who have that look again as a Super Bowl team, will face the Buffalo Bills in Upstate New York on Sunday for Week 9's game of the week.

Siciliano summed it up for the Buffalo faithful:

"I know a lot of Bills fans that will go, 'Eh, OK, cool. Like it was worth the ride on Sunday. I had a good time. I'd rather have them win than lose, certainly. And maybe this factors when it comes to where this game is going to be played when they meet again [in the playoffs], but it's going to ring real hollow. What stands out to me is that the Bills still have trouble stopping the run."

Indeed, Buffalo has work to do against ground attacks. The Bills enter Week 9 giving up 150.3 yards per game, which is 31st in the league with only Cincinnati faring worse.

The trade deadline, which is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, matters for the Bills, and this matchup could further highlight what they need.

"I definitely think this game for the Bills in particular, they're sitting there and they've been kicking around wide receiver options on the trade market trying to figure out can we find maybe a low end No. 1 who is a legit No. 1 like a Jakobi Meyers maybe from the Raiders," Robinson said.

"And now with Ed Oliver, that injury, now they're sitting there and going, do we need to go out and look for a defensive piece where we can plug somebody into that spot because that's such a massive loss for them?"

(Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images) (Todd Kirkland via Getty Images)What's at stake for Chiefs?

Losing to Buffalo in the regular season isn't new for KC. The Chiefs have lost the past four regular-season matchups against the Bills. It's almost a cruel tease to Bills Mafa considering the Chiefs in the Mahomes era have owned Buffalo in the postseason — when it matters. The four January victories have come in wide varieties from convincing to heartbreaking from a Bills fan perspective.

So what's the big gain here for KC?

Mostly, it's potential for KC to improve from its current wild-card slot and keep pushing for what seems to be its birthright, the AFC West crown. The Chiefs trail the 6-2 Denver Broncos by a game and are tied with the Los Angeles Chargers at 5-3.

But it's also a potential for the Chiefs to continue their show of force after a meh start to the season.

"Right now, Kansas City's offense is humming. It's humming 415 yards a game since Week 4, which is just absurd," Siciliano said.

The Vegas oddsmakers, including BetMGM, are certainly buying into KC (which is likely to trigger more moans over Chiefs fatigue. Sorry, folks). Fawkes polled five of them and they all had the Chiefs as their Super Bowl favorite now.

"All of them now had the Chiefs atop their power ratings, several of them for the first time this season because a lot of them had the Bills before the season.

"A lot of them had the Ravens, some had the Eagles. This was the first time where it was unanimous. It was all the Chiefs. … So the Chiefs are high in Vegas' power ratings. Patrick Mahomes is the MVP favorite. The Chiefs are the Super Bowl Bowl favorite. It kind of seems like all is back to right in the NFL world."

"After all I've contributed to the tournament and been an ambassador for them, I can't go and have a practice round there with my three grandchildren…It's terribly, terribly sad," said Gary Player, as he was surprised by the mistreatment he received at Augusta National. A three-time Masters Tournament champion, he has always had issues with the course management. And the Black Knight reiterated the same moments before he celebrated his 90th birthday.

Speaking to Adam Schupak from Golfweek, he was asked what legacy he would like to leave behind upon his passing. Player told Schupak, "I hope I'm the head pro at Augusta. But they won't let me play a single round with my three grandchildren, so they're not going to let me be the head pro there." Perplexed by the issue, the reporter asked why that was the case. Player replied, "That's something you have to ask Augusta, not me."

For a fact, it's not like Gary Player is not an honorary member of Augusta National. The Big Three achieved that honor a long time back. But, as he had explained in his previous interviews, every time he approached them to book a tee time to play with his grandchildren, Augusta National always came up with an excuse to turn him down. Eventually, Player just gave up and realized that he is not welcome on the iconic course, despite being an honorary member.

In fact, his animosity towards the course is such that he doesn't even rate the prestigious major anymore. When he was asked to rank the four majors, Player replied, "I rate the Open at one, the U.S. Open two, PGA three, and Augusta four." His response received a lot of negative reactions, as there is a common belief in the golf community that the Masters Tournament can't be ranked lower than the second spot.

All the controversies aside, it's not uncommon for Gary Player to make surprising claims. Even if they go against the common belief of the golf community. In fact, he made another statement recently that may have shocked a few netizens.

Gary Player doesn't shy away from speaking his mind

It's not uncommon for Gary Player to make surprising claims or reveal shocking information. Many were surprised when he confirmed that he was in love again at 89 back in late 2024 and revealed his new girlfriend, Susan, to the world. A few weeks later, on Valentine's Day, he shared a beautiful montage slideshow on Instagram dedicated to his late wife, Vivienne Verwey, as he celebrated their relationship.

Only a few hours ago, another one of Player's interviews revealed that he said something even more surprising. He stated, "In 1953, when I started it, I was condemned. Arnold Palmer, my brother, said, 'Gary, you can't do this weight training.' Bobby Jones said, 'Gary, you can't do all this weight training. You're going to get muscle-bound. You won't win tournaments after 35.' Well, they're all dead and I'm still going." Even though Gary Player's statement about Arnold Palmer & Bobby Jones is true, his bluntness often takes many by surprise as he continues to live with a free mind like he always did.

TORONTO (AP) — One loss from elimination, the Los Angeles Dodgers are shaking up their lineup again for Game 6 of the World Series at Toronto on Friday night.

After moving from second to third in the order in Wednesday's Game 5 loss, shortstop Mookie Betts dropped into the cleanup spot Friday against Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman.

Betts had not hit as low as fourth since the final game of the 2017 American League Division Series against Houston.

Game 5 was the first time since 2021 that Betts started but wasn't in one of the top two spots in Los Angeles' lineup. Betts is 3 for 23 with no RBIs and no extra-base hits in the World Series.

Catcher Will Smith was set to bat second for the second straight game. Freddie Freeman moved from fourth to third.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he wanted to give leadoff hitter Shohei Ohtani, Smith and Freeman the chance to get on base in front of Betts, adding that Betts had a good day of work on Thursday's off day.

"Where his swing is at mechanically is as good as it's been in a week," Roberts said. "I really feel good about that."

Tommy Edman moved from second base to center field, his first outfield start this postseason, and was set to bat eighth. Miguel Rojas made his first start of the World Series at second base, batting ninth.

"I just really wanted Miggy in there," Roberts said. "He's been a glue guy for our club this year and I just feel that having him in the lineup infuses some extra intensity and energy into the lineup, on the defensive side, too."

The Dodgers shuffled their lineup before Game 5 but had just four hits in a 6-1 loss. Los Angeles had six hits in a 6-2 defeat in Game 4.

Los Angeles is batting .236 as a team through 15 games this October. Dodgers batters have struck out 148 times in 533 at-bats.

Roberts also said Ohtani would not be available to pitch Friday. Ohtani took the loss in Tuesday's Game 4, allowing four runs and six hits in six innings.

Shea Couleé didn't come to play with petty fans, she came to slay the trolls questioning her status as one of the all-time *RuPaul's Drag Race* greats.

RuPaul shook the *All Stars 7 *competition Friday by awarding Shea with three Legendary Legend Stars instead of the usual single-star prize, thus boosting her from last place into one of the top four slots in the upcoming finale. Now, the season 9 alum exclusively tells EW's BINGE podcast (below) how she feels about "fans" attempting to invalidate her progress.

"Immediately, I was already thinking that I want to be in the finale, but I had this gut feeling that for me there will be people who want to discredit or disagree," Shea says of feeling anxiety over the situation during production. "I had to go in there and focus and live up to the agreement that I made to myself that no matter what I was going to give 100 percent, and that's what I did."

The *All Stars 5* champion adds that the three-star twist initially felt like a "strange handout" for her show-stopping variety show performance of her original song "Your Name," but only because Shea is "hard on [her]self" in the context of a competition.

"People [are questioning], 'Did she really deserve those three stars?' I already knew that discourse would happen, and I felt in the moment like, here we go, if I win these, it almost feels like I won't be able to win because people who are fans of the other contestants are immediately going to try to discredit my win," she remembers, later stressing that there's no way for fans to have the full scope of experience that the queens have while filming episodes for hours on end.

"We were the ones who were there for the whole experience," she continues. "There's so much, so I have to finally separate myself and my personal experience and the perception delivered to the fans, because they're forming their opinions based off of what they see.... I can understand how they feel that way. Going as far as to say what someone does or doesn't deserve, that's not language I'd personally use in my life, but I have different experiences than these fans. These fans don't know what it's like."

BenDeLaCreme threw a (loving) banana peel under Jinkx Monsoon's tires as she prepared to compete on *RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 7*.

The season 6 and *All Stars 3* alum exclusively tells EW's BINGE podcast (below) that she helped shape elements of her longtime friend and collaborator's *AS7* runway collection, particularly her porcupine gown for the Spikes on the Runway theme which, according to DeLa, almost looked very, *very* different.

"I actually designed that porcupine outfit, I just drew out a picture for her because I was like, Jinkx, you cannot do the thing you're planning on, which is that she she was going to dress like the spiky tortoise shell from *Mario Kart*. I was like, if you do that, we're over, that is it. I'm breaking up with you. So, I made her a porcupine idea!" DeLa says. "It's like a thing you throw in *Mario Kart*. I was like, Jinkx, this is such an arbitrary reference and also just the worst color combination."

DeLa says that she and Jinkx worked on other looks she debuted on *All Stars 7* as well, mostly chatting through ideas and concepts.

"I'm so glad that we spent the time brainstorming, because we talked about doing multiple seasons like Jaida did. She wanted to do an *Into the Woods* witch and I was like, I think someone else is going to do it," DeLa recalls. "I'm so glad that we talked through those ideas and she didn't wind up doing the same thing."

Jinkx Monsoon models her AS7 Spikes on the Runway outfit designed by BenDeLaCreme. World of Wonder/Paramount+

Since competing on separate seasons of *Drag Race*, Jinkx and DeLa have worked together to successfully snatch the Christmas crown from Santa across multiple projects, including their traveling *To Jesus, Thanks for Everything* and *All I Want for Christmas Is Attention* tours, guest roles in Clea DuVall's Kristen Stewart-starring Christmas rom-com *Happiest Season*, and a film version of *The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show*, which streamed on Hulu through Christmas in 2020. They return to the stage for *The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show* 2022 tour later this year.

Their work outside of *Drag Race* speaks for itself, but they're also not entirely opposed to competing again — as long as they do it together.

"The answer is, I guess, like, sure, I don't know!" DeLa says when asked about the ongoing fan fantasy involving a "Best Friends" edition of *Drag Race*. "It's not something that either of us are campaigning for. I do think it could be fun, but I would need a contractual guarantee that the same [non-elimination] rules as* All Stars 7 *apply."

Jinkx Monsoon swept up the *RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 7 *crown thanks in large part to her *Snatch Game* performance as Judy Garland, but one question about the legendary impersonation has endured for puzzled fans and judges alike: Why did she (hilariously) refer to RuPaul as "Broom" during the challenge?

The season 5 winner revealed that the joke wasn't intended to be understood by anyone other than Alyssa Edwards and Alaska, her drag sisters from her original season on the show, which aired in 2013.

"Alaska and I were constantly doing impressions of Alyssa Edwards' [*Snatch Game*] impersonation of Katy Perry that was so baffling that we couldn't help but just make a whole character based on just that impression. Alyssa Edwards' voice is already extremely unique, and then her voice trying to do Katy Perry was just more Alyssa than even Alyssa normally talks," Jinkx said on Thursday's episode of Vulture's *Good One* podcast. "We kept joking that, as Katy Perry, when Ru asks Alyssa, 'Have you ever kissed a girl?' and Alyssa went, 'Ru, never!' [it became] 'Bru,' and then it just devolved into 'Broom, neber," so when I called Ru 'Broom,' it was the tiniest little Easter egg, pretty much just for Alaska."

Jinkx's iconic *Snatch Game* performance did more than just cleanse the souls of weary *Drag Race* fans: It also absolved the queen's season 5 makeover subject, veteran soldier Dave Lara, of his self-proclaimed role in Garland's death after he made the stunning revelation in the Werk Room back in 2013.

During her performance on *All Stars 7*, Jinkx made a direct address to Lara by telling him that he was "not responsible" for Garland's death. In a subsequent interview with EW, Lara explained that, upon meeting the iconic actress at a Boston speakeasy in November 1968, he provided her with barbiturates shortly before she died the following year.

"I don't want to be judged by people. I don't want to be castigated or made out to be the villain. Ru and I had a conversation on the show where she said [Judy] did a lot to get to this place. Judy had a choice, and, like *The Matrix*, you can take the blue pill and go to sleep and wake up in the morning and never remember any of this, or you can take the red pill and go down the rabbit hole and never come out. She made that choice," Lara said. "Whether I allowed or contributed to that, she was so clever, she would've found the pills anyway. That made me feel a little better, but people don't know about that time. We were stupid, we were ignorant. Giving someone with an addiction pills? I've never given anyone pills or drugs or anything since."

**Warning: This article contains spoilers for *Fast X*.**

As* The Fast Saga* speeds into its final lap, the franchise is pulling out all of its biggest tricks and most emotional moments on the way to the finish line. *Fast X* packs in a double-crossing twist, multiple cliffhangers, two huge returns, and even a death in the Toretto family.

"It's been 20 years, almost a quarter of a century with these characters, this family," director Louis Leterrier says on EW's *BINGE: The Fast Saga* podcast. "They have done so much for so many people, and also have fought so many enemies that now people are coming back after them. They are going to have to pay the heaviest price, you know, just the heftiest price. Tears are going to be shed."

The first major cost to Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) crew comes in the form of an epic sacrifice. After gleeful villain Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) swipes Little Brian (Leo Abelo Perry) right off of a moving vehicle, his brother Jakob (John Cena) turns his custom cannon car into a bomb to prevent an attack on Dom and give him a chance to rescue his son. The heroic Hail Mary sees Jakob go out in a literal blaze of glory.

Jakob's death helps complete the character's arc for Leterrier. "[I thought], what if we really leaned into this relationship with Little B and this uncle who never experienced love or hasn't experienced love in a long time?" he tells EW. "And then that comes through via his nephew and just the awkwardness that turns into love, and [there's] just that moment where he feels he really accepts the responsibility of being a part of this family."

When approaching Cena, Leterrier admits he wasn't sure at first how the actor would respond to the idea. Cena could tell. "I remember [Louis] being extremely nervous because what that signifies is something that could elicit a reaction from me," he says. "But what he failed to realize is my perspective of every opportunity is to allow me to do the best I can with this opportunity. And that's it. And his idea was the best. And I'm a big believer in best idea wins."

Still, as the newest member of the family exits, an old favorite gets to make a surprise return to the land of the living: Gisele.

Fast & Furious 6 (2013) GAL GADOT as Gisele

Gal Gadot in 2013's 'Fast & Furious 6'. Giles Keyte/Universal

A decade earlier, Gisele (Gal Gadot) made her own sacrifice to save Han (Sung Kang) in 2013's *Fast & Furious 6*. Han would eventually meet his death in 2006's *The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift —* in a bit of timeline trickery that's now become central to *The Fast Saga*'s lore — only for fans to learn in *F9* that Han's death had been faked by Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), bringing his character back into the fold. Now it seems that both halves of the franchise's most tragic love story have been alive the whole time.

Kang is excited about all the possibilities it creates for the future, including potentially showcasing more intimacy in Han and Gisele's scenes together. "What are those quiet moments when two people are missing each other? How do they change? How do you engage in conversation, and where do you find that shorthand again in a relationship? Is it distant? Is it intimate right away? Is it like becoming friends again, earning that friendship? So, there's so much."

It was important to Leterrier, though, to make sure Gisele was returning for a purpose. "There was no bringing back Gisele without knowing where we were taking her and what was going to happen in the next one and how involved was she going to be," he says. "Gal was very clear with us, which was like, 'Yeah, you know, I love it, and this is my family, but what's the plan?' So obviously we had to think hard, but luckily we had."

Fast Five

Vin Diesel and The Rock in 'Fast Five'. Jaimie Trueblood/Universal Pictures

The reveal that Dante Reyes has his sights set on Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs is arguably an even bigger surprise. Johnson previously said he wouldn't return for the franchise's ninth and tenth installments after reports of conflict between him and Diesel, but his mid-credits scene in *Fast X* suggests he's had a change of heart about *The Fast Saga*'s grand finale.

"It's a great kind of reflection on life and how movies can maybe be a teaching moment, give you opportunities to learn from your heroes," says Kang. "Like, oh, they squashed that. What was that about? Like, I don't even remember that. Like, what was the problem?"

Despite the return of both Gisele and Hobbs, Leterrier makes one thing clear: "Not everyone is going to come back though."

Remember, *Fast X* is still just part one of the franchise's long goodbye, and the stakes will only get higher. "At one point, this model is not going to be able to continue," says Leterrier. "And that point is very soon."

My property taxes have ballooned 134% over my 20 years of homeownership. It seems like every year I grumble about another increase, pay the bill and move on. Recent data, however, has me rethinking my approach — it turns out I might be leaving serious money on the table.

More than 40% of properties in the U.S. could save $100 or more — and sometimes much more — with a property tax appeal, according to a Realtor.com analysis. For millions of homeowners, the savings could add up to about $539 annually, and that's just for a median property. You could save more (or less) depending on where you live.

"Somewhere between 3% and 5% of homeowners actually file an appeal, and of those, between 30% and 50% win some kind of reduction," says Pete Sepp, president of the National Taxpayers Union, a nonprofit, non-partisan taxpayer advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C. In other words, there's a real chance to save money.

Take Tomball, Texas-based homeowner Russell Lindley, who has appealed property taxes for 10 of the 11 homes he's owned with his wife. He says he's succeeded more than half of the time.

"Why would you allow them to assess a value on your house and not protest to try to save money?" he asks. "The largest property tax reduction I received was approximately $3,000 in a single year."

Filing a formal request asking your assessor to review and possibly lower your home's assessed value — and, in turn, your tax bill — can be a chore, but it can also put substantial money back in your pocket.

Even long-time housing reporters like me can miss opportunities to save money, and now I'm on a mission to help you avoid my mistake. Let's break down what happens before, during and after the appeals process so you have the best shot at lowering your tax bill.

The assessment process isn't perfect

Before we dive into property tax appeals, let's step back and pull back the curtain on what went into determining the amount on that dreaded tax bill to begin with.

While every state, county or township uses its own formula to assess property value, one thing is the same: Property tax assessments typically rely on mass data, not a personal inspection of your home.

"They basically put in all the data and spit out all the numbers," explains Colton Pace, co-founder of Ownwell, a company that helps homeowners appeal their property taxes. "It works much of the time, but it inevitably produces misdiagnoses. That means the model often misses unique property traits, interior condition or hyper-local market nuances."

Armed with that data, the assessor sets your home's assessed value, multiplies it by the local tax rate (set by your city, county, or school district), and voilà, that's your property tax bill.

"It's not necessarily evil intent or anything like that," Sepp says. "It's just that there are a lot of properties to assess and local governments have to figure out a way to do that quickly and efficiently."

Learn more: The 10 states with the highest property taxes, and the 10 states with the lowest

2 steps to building and winning your appeal

So what exactly does it take to build a successful case? Sepp advises homeowners to begin with evidence-based homework, focusing on two key aspects: the accuracy and comparability of the property's assessment.

Are there any mistakes in the assessment?

"Accuracy has to do with simple errors the assessor makes," Sepp says. "There are only two bathrooms in your house, not three. It's a one-car garage, not a two-car garage. Sometimes you can bring those up with the assessor without even filing a formal appeal. You may be able to call them and say that this just isn't right."

Keep in mind: Your property record card can be a goldmine. You can get that online through your city assessor's site or by contacting your local tax assessor. Look for mistakes like incorrect square footage, or the wrong number of bathrooms or bedrooms. Even small errors can significantly affect the assessed value of your home, providing you with more ammunition.

In the appeal, you can (and should) include photos, repair estimates or contractor quotes to show your home's true condition. Sepp says some things, like an outdated 1980s kitchen, probably won't move the needle because they are subjective. But clear, tangible issues, like multiple leaks in your roof? Absolutely.

How does your house compare to similar homes?

The next case builder is researching the comparability of the assessment, which involves looking at recent sales of similar homes in your neighborhood.

"Look up the values, not only the sale values, but the values the assessor has for similarly situated properties in your neighborhood," says Sepp. "What are five, better yet, 10 properties in your neighborhood that were assessed? 'What were their levels on a per square foot basis, and do they compare with your property's assessment on a per square foot basis?'

But here's where things can get a little tricky. Some areas use a fractional assessment system, meaning your property isn't taxed on its full market value. Instead, they tax a percentage of your property's market value, like 90%, for example. Because of the methods used, it can be harder to compare your property's assessed value to recent home sales. Another important consideration: In most jurisdictions, the sale price of your home isn't considered the same as the assessed value, and those numbers can be wildly different.

Chang Fu learned this lesson firsthand. When Fu and his wife lived in Seattle, he successfully appealed his property taxes in 2019 by using his home's sale price as evidence, saving $1,000 a year. When he moved to Austin, Texas, he tried the same approach when appealing his property taxes in 2025 and was denied. Now in arbitration, Fu is confident he can present a stronger case by comparing his property's assessment to that of similar homes as well as its current market value.

"I literally have six neighbors in my cul-de-sac and my six neighbors all have lower [home] values," says Fu. "I'm hoping to get a fair arbitration and, ideally, a positive outcome so I can pay similar property taxes as my neighbors."

An appeal could send your bill down … or up

Nobody wants to pay higher property taxes. The reality, however, is that appealing your taxes won't always lead to a lower bill. In rare cases, a closer look could show that your home was underassessed. So before blindly appealing, do some preliminary research to see that you don't inadvertently draw attention to any errors in the original assessment that could work against you. The assessor may also discover home improvements that weren't previously reported, potentially raising your home's assessed value. But still, if you believe your assessment is incorrect, it doesn't mean you shouldn't try to appeal.

The burden of proof isn't always on you

The success or failure of your appeal could have a lot to do with where you live. For example, in Indiana, if the assessment has increased by more than 5%, it's up to the assessor to prove their findings are correct. As Pace notes, homeowners in assessor-burden-of-proof states like Indiana tend to have much higher appeal success rates. While that might sound like an advantage, it doesn't mean homeowners don't have to do any research.

"Even if the assessor has the burden of proof that, that doesn't mean you have the ability to say, 'Well, I think [my house] should be valued at $1,'" says Sepp. "You have to have some kind of basis to say, 'He [the assessor] says he's proven his case. Here's why I disagree.'"

The not-so-good news? Pace says that in approximately 80% of geographies, the responsibility for proving the case flips to property owners or the tax agent, which is the company helping the homeowner with the appeal. This can make it harder for homeowners to win, and as Pace explains, "This is a higher burden than convicting someone of a crime. It's not [just] beyond a reasonable doubt. You have to completely show that they are wrong."

While it's not impossible to win in these cases, research and preparation are critical.

The appeals process isn't as intimidating as you think

The idea of appealing your property taxes can sound daunting, but Sepp says it's not as scary as it seems.

"It's not as if you're going to be put before a tribunal and interrogated about all of the features of your house," he says. "Most assessment appeals processes are set up to be no more difficult than traffic court. If you feel you got a parking ticket that you didn't deserve, you gather evidence to show why you feel that way, and you present it to a panel that's hearing a couple of dozen of these things a day. You're not on trial. You're simply being asked to present evidence of why you have the opinion you do."

The process of appealing has also become easier with services that provide comparable property assessments and online access to records. "Even in the assessor's office itself, there are AI tools that can probably help you with preparing an appeal," says Sepp. "And in some jurisdictions, which occurred a lot during COVID appeals, hearings are often held online, or you can file an appeal by mail."

After the appeal, you'll receive a written notice of the decision and the reason behind it. If you disagree, you can often appeal to a higher board. The total time frame varies depending on where you live and the complexity of the case.

You can go it alone or get assistance

Nothing says you can't DIY your property tax appeal. Many homeowners, like Fu, go that route. "If you're comfortable doing it yourself, go do it," he says. Keep in mind that you will likely have to pay a small appeal fee, which can vary depending on where you live or the value of the property.

But if you'd rather not go it alone, there are companies, like Ownwell, that offer professional assistance, charging a fee only if they successfully reduce your tax bill. "You hire a doctor to solve your problems, why not hire an expert?" says Lindley, who used property tax negotiation services for most of his property tax appeals. "You don't pay money unless they save you money. It always seemed like a no-brainer to me."

If your situation is complicated or you have a high-value property, Amy Loftsgordon, legal editor at legal resource Nolo, says it might make sense to hire an attorney or a reputable tax reassessment company. However, she cautions homeowners against using reassessment companies that try to solicit business from you.

"They send out notices that look something like a tax bill and say you might be entitled to reduce taxes," says Loftsgordon. "This is without making it very clear that they're a profit company and that [a property tax appeal] is something that you can indeed do on your own. Typically, a reputable company isn't going to send you tricky advertising or contact you."

Move fast on the appeal; the clock is ticking

Once you get that property tax assessment notice in the mail, don't wait to act on it. While the proposed assessments may take effect in the upcoming fiscal year or the latter half of the current one, it doesn't mean you have plenty of time to respond.

"Typically, when you get the thing in the mail, you have between 30 and 60 days to either give notice or file your appeal," says Sepp. "If you have a 30-day deadline to file an appeal, it may be a very simple matter of filling out a form that says, 'I disagree with my assessment because it's overvalued compared to other properties.' You may not have to submit all of your evidence at that point. You just have to put in the appeal, then your hearing date will be scheduled. It then triggers another two weeks or so for you to file all of your stuff online or through the mail."

Miss the deadline, and you'll have to wait until next year to challenge your assessment. Property values and market conditions can change, so it's worth reviewing your notice carefully each year. And nothing says you can't appeal every year if you believe your assessment is consistently too high.

The bottom line

Appealing your property taxes might sound tedious, but it's a commonly overlooked way to save money as a homeowner. "Making the assumption that the government has done its homework would be a mistake," Sepp says.

I will be tackling my own appeal next year, so stay tuned for that. The key takeaway? Don't assume your bill is set in stone. Taking the time to double-check your property assessment and file an appeal when the numbers don't add up can translate into hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in savings every year. Your wallet will thank you.

McDonald's rounding cash transactions as some locations run short of pennies

The most recent business feeling the penny pinch? McDonald's.

With the U.S. Mint having made its last pennies two months ago, some stores and retailers including Kroger, Home Depot and Kwik Shop have begun to run short of pennies. Now, the penny shortage has hit McDonald's.

Some McDonald's locations in certain parts of the U.S. have run short of pennies and have begun rounding cash transactions up or down to the nearest five cents when customers don't have exact change, the company told USA Today.

"Following the discontinuation of pennies nationwide, some McDonald's locations may not be able to provide exact change," McDonald's said in a statement. "We have a team actively working on long-term solutions to keep things simple and fair for customers. This is an issue affecting all retailers across the country, and we will continue to work with the federal government to obtain guidance on this matter going forward."

Money matters: With grocery prices rising, here's how shoppers are saving money

McDonald's is running short of pennies. So, how are cash payments being handled?

When a customer pays cash and doesn't have exact change, the purchase total is rounded down by as much as two cents or up by as much two cents. So, if your lunch meal cost $12.06, for example, and you didn't have exact change and the restaurant didn't have pennies, you'd be charged $12.05. If your meal was $9.39, the total would be round up to $9.40.

The rounding only affects cash payments – the majority of McDonald's transactions in the U.S made by credit card or other cashless payments made in the McDonald's app, for instance.

Restaurants may ask customers to use exact change or cashless payment options, the company said.

This rounding practice isn't new and has been used in other countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand where low-denomination coins have been eliminated. Some have round up while others have round down, according to Money.com.

Why is there a shortage of pennies?

Technically, the U.S. is not short of pennies; about 250 billion pennies are in circulation. But there have been "localized supply issues," according to the American Banking Association.

The end of the penny came after President Donald Trump told the Treasury Department in February to stop making the coins, which cost more than 3 cents to produce. (They cost 3.69 cents to make, according to the U.S. Mint.)

With the U.S. Mint having made its final pennies, some shortages are happening because roughly one-third of the about 165 Federal Reserve coin terminal facilities – where coins are distributed and deposited – have stopped penny transactions, the ABA said. The "supply issues" are likely in parts of the country where those terminals have stopped circulating pennies, the organization said.

This story has been with new information.

(Reuters) -A federal judge on Friday said 36 drugmakers and executives must face nearly all claims in an antitrust lawsuit brought by most U.S. states, accusing them of conspiring to fix prices of 80 generic drugs.

Chief Judge Michael Shea of the federal district court in Connecticut rejected claims that 45 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories waited an unreasonably long time to pursue federal antitrust claims, and missed formal deadlines to file similar claims under state laws.

Led by Connecticut, the states accused drugmakers including Pfizer, Perrigo and Sandoz of conspiring to raise prices, limit competition and allocate customers for drugs, primarily for skin ailments, between 2009 and 2016.

In a 130-page decision, Shea said the defendants failed to show that the states "lacked diligence" in pursuing their case, citing evidence that the defendants pursued "affirmative acts" to conceal their alleged collusion.

"A reasonable juror could find that the defendants' 'blaming supply,' making uncompetitively high bids, and falsely citing production costs for increased prices were aimed at concealing their alleged conspiracy," the Hartford-based judge wrote.

Lawyers for Pfizer, Perrigo and Sandoz did not immediately respond to requests for comment after market hours. A spokeswoman for Connecticut Attorney General William Tong did not immediately respond to a similar request.

Brand names of some products in the case included the acne medication Differin, anti-fungal medicine Lotrimin AF Cream, and Ritalin for attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The case is Connecticut et al v. Sandoz Inc et al, U.S. District Court, District of Connecticut, No. 20-00802.

Leslie Jones kept calling Pedro Pascal the wrong name at SNL50

Leslie Jones had a comically bad time learning Pedro Pascal's name.

The former Saturday Night Live cast member, who was part of the big SNL50 anniversary special in February, recalls meeting the Last of Us actor as one of her favorite moments from the experience. If only she could have remembered his name when they met.

The special as a whole was "everything," she said.

"And Pedro, is it Pedro?" she asked on Vulture's Good One podcast, still struggling with his name. "Let me tell you, [I] called him Pablo until he told me his name is Pedro. So, I was like, 'Pablo, Pablo.' And he was like, 'Pedro.' And I was like, 'Pablo.' He's like, 'Pedro.' And I was like, 'Who the f— is Pedro?' And he was like, 'That's my name.'"

That finally convinced her.

Jones, who was a regular on the NBC sketch series from 2014 to 2019, was one of the dozens of former cast members who descended on Studio 8H for the epic evening. She took part in a "Black Jeopardy" sketch along with fellow alums Eddie Murphy, Tracy Morgan, and Chris Rock, and longtime cast member Kenan Thompson.

Pascal, who hosted the sketch show in 2023, was one of the many celebrities who were part of the night's list of non-cast performers, which also included the likes of Scarlett Johansson, who happens to be the wife of "Weekend Update" cohost Colin Jost, and 10-time host Tom Hanks.

Pascal joined the fun as part of the "Domingo: Vow Renewal" sketch, featuring Marcello Hernández's recurring character. Pascal and Bad Bunny played the lothario's hot brothers. Sabrina Carpenter and SNL alums Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Andy Samberg, Martin Short, and Molly Shannon were also part of the sketch alongside several current cast members.

"I was the first record scratch of the night by missing my cues like three times in a row," the Mandalorian star scolded himself about coming in at the wrong time.

"I remember thinking, 'F---! I f---ed it up!'" Pascal said. "I was really, really upset with myself for missing the cues. I feel like there was a cognitive and auditory failure on my part where I was so nervous I really couldn't hear what was happening or what the cue was. I guess no matter what kind of singing and how bad or funny it's supposed to be, I have just sheer terror of having to sing in any kind of capacity."

Let's just blame that one on Pablo.

Ashley Dupré had harsh words for Cheryl Burke after the former Dancing with the Stars pro gave her stepdaughter a 9 in the Oct. 28 episode

Dupré told Burke to "go take more Ozempic" in a video reacting to the score

Now, she's apologizing for the remarks

Alix Earle's stepmom, Ashley Dupré, is apologizing after her "stepmotherly instincts" got the better of her.

Two days after Dupré harshly criticized Cheryl Burke for giving her stepdaughter a nine, on the Oct. 28 edition of Dancing with the Stars, she offered the professional dancer a public apology.

"I just wanted to jump on here and apologize for making comments that were insensitive in the heat of the competition," Dupré said after explaining that she was on her way to a Halloween party.

In the original reaction video, Dupré and her children watched along as Earle performed a tango to "bury a friend" by Billie Eilish.

While Earle and her partner, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, received tens from judges Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, Burke, who was serving as a guest judge for the night, gave them a 9/10.

"Oh, go take more Ozempic," said Dupré after Burke held up her scoring paddle. After her children asked, "Go take more Ozempic?" Dupré doubled down on her comments and said, "What? She looks weird. Doesn't even look like her."

Ozempic is a diabetes drug that's become popular as a weight-loss tool. In May, Burke told PEOPLE that she had lost about 30 to 35 lbs. in recent months and attributed her weight loss to intermittent fasting and regular exercise.

"I always try to pick others up," Dupré said in the video. "If you follow me, you know that about me, I hope, and that's how we raise our children. I'm sorry that my actions did not reflect that.

Dupré ended her video by wishing everyone an "amazing" and "safe" Halloween.

Her apology video comes one day after Burke hit back at Duprè on Instagram.

"I know that I did the best that I could with the information that I had — and with what I saw in real time — and for the people who think body shaming is okay, especially in front of your children, that sends a powerful message about what you value, and clearly it's not kindness," Burke said.

She added near the end of the clip, "If that's the example you choose to set, then please, I beg of you, leave my name out of it."
