Feeling less "Netflix and chill" and more "Netflix and chill your blood imagining all the ways the world could end" these days? Looking to disassociate yourself into a universe filled with murderous creatures, anarchic nomads, and other assorted existential threats? If so, the streaming giant's got you covered.

Whether you prefer it when humanity ends with an outbreak (*28 Years Later*) or with a whimper (*Don't Look Up*), read on for **'s list of the 16 best apocalypse movies streaming on Netflix right now.

28 Years Later (2025)

Danny Boyle's *28 Years Later *proves the franchise still has a lot to say. Released 18 years after *28 Weeks Later* (2007), the third installment in the postapocalyptic horror series is set on one of the British Isles, where a community has flourished, isolated from the more evolved versions of the infected that still terrorize the region. The film follows 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams), who must contend with his mother's growing illness and his father's inability to help her.

Writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle reunite for the first time since *28 Days Later *(2002), and their collaboration meditates on British culture and isolationism in a post-Brexit, COVID-impacted world. EW's writer calls the film "strange, unpredictable, gloriously revolting, darkly funny, and, when you least expect it, rather touching. It's a full package, and one of the richest horror movies in a very long time." Its own sequel, *28 Years Later: The Bone Temple*, will premiere in January 2026. *—Ilana Gordon*

Battleship (2012)

Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper in 'Battleship'

Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper in 'Battleship'. Frank Masi

*Battleship* proves board games aren't just for basements. With an eclectic cast that includes both Liam Neeson and Rihanna, *Battleship* is a military science fiction action film that combines a love story, aliens, and good old-fashioned naval warfare — and somehow manages to pull it all off.

Propelled by the best special effects available at the time, while still nodding to the game's original low-tech roots, *Battleship* also manages to reunite *Friday Night Lights* director Peter Berg with *FNL* star Taylor Kitsch to great effect. If you're looking for an action film that won't sink under the weight of your expectations, *Battleship*, EW's critic writes, is the "rousing, engaging, and emotionally complex action war picture the silly 2001 action war picture *Pearl Harbor* only wished it could be." *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Battleship*: Netflix

**EW grade:** B+

**Director: **Peter Berg

Bird Box (2018)

Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes in 'Bird Box'

This deeply unsettling Sandra Bullock film finds humanity blindly stumbling to survive after an unseen force drives the bulk of the population to suicide. "It's a thriller about motherhood," director Susanne Bier tells EW. "[Bullock's character is] very forceful, very uncompromising. She's a very contemporary female hero."

EW's critic calls *Bird Box* "taut and defiantly in the moment." Watch it, and you'll never take the luxury of driving without a blindfold for granted again. *—Sara Netzley*

Don't Look Up (2021)

Jonah Hill as Jason Orlean, Leonardo DiCaprio as Dr. Randall Mindy, Meryl Streep as President Orlean, and Jennifer Lawrence as Kate Dibiasky in 'Don't Look Up'.

The mega-comet is real, but it's a fame and fake news apocalypse that ultimately dooms the Earth in *Don't Look Up*. EW's critic calls the Adam McKay film a "winking indictment of climate-change deniers and alternative-fact peddlers" who are happy to ignore global existential threats as they chase a little more clout. As McKay tells EW, "This movie came from my terror about the climate crisis and the fact that we live in a society that tends to place it as the fourth or fifth news story, or even deny that it's happening, and how horrifying that is, but at the same time [how] preposterously funny."

*Don't Look Up* stars Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, and, conservatively, a billion other famous faces. (As tempting a target as Earth is for killer comets, McKay's gravitational pull on actors is even stronger.) *—S.N.*

Where to watch *Don't Look Up*: Netflix

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Tom Cruise as Maj. William Cage in 'Edge of Tomorrow'

The characters in *Groundhog Day* and *Palm Springs* might have thought they were stuck in the worst time loops possible, but they were never forced to die in the same battle over and over again. In *Edge of Tomorrow*, Tom Cruise stars as Major Cage, a public affairs officer who is more accustomed to running his mouth than discharging his weapons.

After Cage is dispatched to the front lines against aliens known as Mimics who have overtaken Earth, he finds himself repeatedly dying in the same fight — and the only person who believes him is war hero Sgt. Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who once experienced something similar. Doubted by the Army, including General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson), it's up to Vrataski and Cage to devise a plan to use Cage's looping abilities to destroy the Mimics and save humanity. *—I.G.*

Matt Damon is a man on a mission to save himself in the 2013 sci-fi thriller *Elysium*. Damon plays Max, a former car thief living in the dystopic remains of Los Angeles in the year 2154. After Max is accidentally exposed to radiation at work, he learns he has five days left to live. His only chance for survival is to leave Earth and head to Elysium — the artificial world where the wealthy reside — which houses technology capable of curing any ailment. But when Max hijacks information belonging to Elysium's defense secretary (Jodie Foster), it seems unlikely he will ever reach his intended destination alive.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp, EW's critic writes, "*Elysium* confirms the talent — for razory mayhem and shocking satire, for the crazed spectacle of future decay — that Blomkamp showcased in his amazing first feature, *District 9* (2009)." *—I.G.*

*Godzilla Minus One* won the 2024 Oscar for Best Visual Effects, but the film is so much more than a monster movie with incredible CGI. Set in Japan, a country ravaged by the after-effects of World War II, the film follows a failed kamikaze pilot as he is haunted both by his performance during the war and a gargantuan monster with a heat ray capable of razing Tokyo.

A love story disguised as a horror movie, *Godzilla Minus One* offers stunning performances, a fascinating historical perspective, and — of course — the kind of city-trampling mayhem one would expect when selecting a *Godzilla *movie. You know they did a good job when the filmmaker has you sympathizing with both the monster and the citizens rallying to defeat it. *—I.G.*

Australian filmmaker Grant Sputore's debut outing offers a heady mix of rich characters, shifting loyalties, and thought-provoking ideas, along with a fierce performance from Danish actress Clara Rugaard as a young woman grappling with the threat to the only life she's ever known. *—S.N.*

Director Sam Esmail tells EW he wanted to "get inside your mind and unlock the fears that you might really have about our world" in *Leave the World Behind, *which was produced by Barack and Michelle Obama's production company. You can't argue about the film's pedigree — or the terror of a world without technology. *—S.N.*

Based on author Andy Weir's best-selling novel and fronted by a tour de force performance from Matt Damon, Ridley Scott's *The Martian* was nominated for Oscars in multiple categories — including Best Picture — but the real winner here is science. Scott and his team worked closely with NASA experts to nail the specifics, and the movie both educates and entertains.

*The Martian* begins on Mars in the year 2035, when astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) and his fellow NASA crew members — led by Cmdr. Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain) — find their mission interrupted by severe weather. After Watney is knocked out by the storm and presumed dead, the crew departs without him, leaving the astronaut stranded on the Red Planet. Unwilling to give up, Watney, whose area of expertise is botany, must figure out how to connect with comms and survive on Mars. *—I.G.*

George Clooney directed, co-produced, and starred in *The Midnight Sky*, which finds his lushly bearded Arctic scientist attempting to prevent a crew of astronauts, including Felicity Jones and David Oyelowo, from returning to Earth where a global catastrophe awaits them.

Filming took place in Iceland, and the weather proved to be its own mini-catastrophe for Clooney. "It was like 40 below, 60-70-mile-an-hour winds, and it's tricky because you could get lost 15 feet away from the camera," he told EW. "I lost like 25 pounds [for the part], so I was pretty weak in general and I'm also directing a big film and you need energy. I was pretty beat up." *—S.N.*

Oxygen (2021)

Mélanie Laurent as Elizabeth 'Liz' Hansen in 'Oxygen'

Mélanie Laurent as Elizabeth 'Liz' Hansen in 'Oxygen'.

A nightmare comes to life for claustrophobics everywhere, *Oxygen *is a French-language sci-fi film that thinks outside the box in terms of action. At the genesis, an unidentified woman (Mélanie Laurent) awakens in an airtight medical unit, unsure of who or where she is. Interactions with the system's AI — dubbed M.I.L.O. (Medical Interface Liaison Officer) — provide some clarity as to her identity, but no matter what she tries, she cannot escape her prison.

As she seeks to understand who placed her in the box and why, truths about her personal life and the current state of the world come into focus — but her search for context is actually a race to outwit the slowly depleting oxygen levels. Laurent is excellent, and despite being forced to perform on her back, she manages to imbue the film with a strong sense of determination and humanity. *—I.G.*

Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, and Craig Robinson as themselves in 'This Is the End'

Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, and Craig Robinson as themselves in 'This Is the End'. Suzanne Hanover/Sony Pictures/Everett

World destruction has never been funnier than in *This Is the End*, a meta-comedy about Hollywood, the Rapture, and who deserves to survive. What starts out as a party at James Franco's house — featuring a who's who of early 2010s comedy talent — quickly devolves into a dystopian hellscape, played with the utmost gravitas by the stars who manage to survive the fiery chaos.

Directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg flawlessly satirize the actors' public personas to deliver a movie that they claim is 85 percent improvised. The jokes might be off-the-cuff, but the premise is rock solid and pristinely executed. As EW's critic notes, "It's the wildest screen comedy in a long time, and also the smartest, the most fearlessly inspired, and the snort-out-loud funniest." *—I.G.*

Where to watch *This Is the End*: Netflix

**EW grade:** A

**Directors: **Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg

**Cast:** James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, Emma Watson

The only thing faster than a bullet train is the zombie infection overtaking its passengers. In the South Korean action horror film *Train to Busan*, Seok-woo (Gong Yoo) is a work-obsessed hedge fund manager and absentee father who agrees to accompany his young daughter Soo-an (Kim Su-an) on a trip from Seoul to Busan so she can spend her birthday with her mother. As the train departs, a sick woman begins transitioning into a zombie — and infecting everyone around her.

Now barreling full-speed across the country, Seok-woo, Soo-an, and the other passengers must find a way to survive the apocalyptic journey in order to find refuge in Busan. These zombies seem to have studied at the *World War Z* School of Swarming; they move at the same frenetic speed, aiming to infect everyone in their path. *—I.G.*

*Orphan Black *lovers will want to check out *What Happened to Monday*, a 2017 sci-fi action thriller directed by Tommy Wirkola. The film stars Noomi Rapace, giving seven unique performances as septuplet sisters, each named after a different day of the week. The siblings live in a fascist America where overpopulation has necessitated the creation of a Child Allocation Bureau (run by Glenn Close), which imposes a single-child policy on all families.

The septuplets live secretly with their grandfather (Willem Dafoe), share the name Karen Settman (a relic from their dead mother), and are only allowed to leave the house on the day of the week that corresponds with their name. Like the malevolent clown dancing in its dark heart, *IT: Welcome to Derry* is a strange creature.

The series is technically a prequel to 2017's *IT* and 2019's *IT Chapter Two, *which were adapted from Stephen King's 1986 epic novel about Derry, Maine, a small town being terrorized by an ancient, child-devouring evil that surfaces every 27 years. According to co-creator Andy Muschietti, who also directed the films, *Welcome to Derry* will adapt the book's various interludes, which dig deep into Derry's violent history and how its namesake creature factors into it.

And while that's true, the show is also its own beast, deviating greatly from King's story by weaving in military intrigue, spycraft, and Native American mythology. That gives the creative team ample freedom to flesh out their vision of Derry, all while paying tribute to the breadth of King's vast oeuvre, which, by virtue of the author's penchant for cross-pollination, lends itself to Easter eggs.

What an Easter egg *is*, exactly, is up for interpretation. But for the purposes of this piece, we're focusing on direct and oblique references to the book *IT* and King's work in general. Also, for the sake of clarity, we'll be calling the story's nameless shapeshifter Pennywise, the leering clown that often serves as its painted face.

Below are all of the Stephen King Easter eggs in *Welcome to Derry. *Be sure to bookmark this piece, as we'll be updating it after each new episode.

Episode 1: 'The Pilot'

Bert the Turtle in 'IT: Welcome to Derry' episode 1

Bert the Turtle in 'IT: Welcome to Derry' episode 1.

- The surname of Leroy Hanlon (Jovan Adepo) will be familiar to fans of both the novel and its adaptations, as it's shared by Mike, a key member of the Losers' Club who goes on to become the town's librarian (and the researcher of the interludes on which *Welcome to Derry* is based). An older version of Leroy (played by Steven Williams) is seen in Muschietti's *IT* films showing Mike (Chosen Jacobs) the ropes at his abattoir.****

- Fans may also recognize the surname of Teddy Uris (Mikkal Karim-Fidler), the broccoli-haired pre-teen who features heavily in episode 1. Stan Uris (played by Wyatt Oleff and Andy Bean in the films) is among the most ill-fated members of the Losers' Club. Considering what happens to Teddy at the end of episode 1, it's likely his brother, not him, who is Stan's father.

- We don't spend much time with him in episode 1, but the Black soldier seen with Leroy at the Derry military base is Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk). Hallorann is best known from *The Shining*, in which he teaches a young Danny Torrance to use his psychic gift. The character also appears briefly in *IT*'s first interlude, though it's clear his role will be expanded on in this series.****

- One of the more curious elements of *IT* is Maturin the turtle, a cosmic being that essentially serves as a benevolent counterpart to the evil in Derry. Maturin hasn't been portrayed in any adaptations yet — it would be very difficult to pull off — but is often referenced. *Welcome to Derry* is no exception, with the school's mascot being Bert the Turtle. We also see Matty (Miles Ekhardt) give Lilly (Clara Stack) a toy turtle, and she responds by saying, "Turtles are lucky."

A bloody finger rising from the drain on 'IT: Welcome to Derry'

A bloody finger rising from the drain on 'IT: Welcome to Derry'.

- After Lilly hears the voice of missing Matty coming up through her bathtub drain, she shrieks when one of his bloody fingers reaches up through it. This may or may not be a reference to "The Moving Finger," a short story collected in King's 1993 book *Nightmares & Dreamscapes*. In that story, a man is haunted by a long, multi-jointed finger rising from his bathroom sink.****

- Eagle-eyed viewers will see a *Creature From the Black Lagoon* poster in Phil's (Jack Molloy Legault) room. In the book, the scaly Creature is among the many forms Pennywise takes when terrorizing its victims.

"Alvin Marsh," reads bathroom graffiti in 'IT: Welcome to Derry'

"Alvin Marsh," reads bathroom graffiti in 'IT: Welcome to Derry'.

- During a scene between Lilly and Marge (Matilda Lawler) in the school bathroom, the name "Alvin Marsh" is seen written inside a heart on the wall. Alvin Marsh is the name of the abusive father of the Losers' Club's Beverly Marsh (played by Sophia Lillis and Jessica Chastain in the films).****

- This one might be pushing it, but Teddy is notably seen reading a Clayface comic book. For one, Clayface is, like Pennywise, a shapeshifter. Secondly, DC Studios' upcoming Clayface film was written by Mike Flanagan, who has directed multiple Stephen King adaptations, including *Gerald's Game*, *Doctor Sleep*, and the upcoming *Carrie* series for Amazon.**

Episode 2: 'The Thing in the Dark'

Peter Outerbridge as Clint Bowers in 'IT: Welcome to Derry' episode 2

Peter Outerbridge as Clint Bowers in 'IT: Welcome to Derry' episode 2.

- This episode offers a look at how the U.S. military is attempting to leverage Hallorann's "gifts," a.k.a. the shining, to help track down Pennywise's lair.****

- Juniper Hill, the mental hospital where Lilly is taken at episode's end, appears in numerous King books, including *IT*. (In the book, one of the guards is named John Koontz, a supposed dig at author Dean Koontz, one of King's contemporaries.)****

- Derry's police chief is named Clint Bowers (Peter Outerbridge), another name that should ring a bell with Constant Readers. Henry Bowers is the local punk who relentlessly bullies the Losers' Club and later falls under the spell of Pennywise. Henry's dad, Butch, was portrayed as a cop in Muschietti's films, and we're guessing Clint is his father.

A sign announcing the building of a Paul Bunyan statue on 'IT: Welcome to Derry'

A sign announcing the building of a Paul Bunyan statue on 'IT: Welcome to Derry'.

- A great deal of hubbub is being made over the installation of a Paul Bunyan statue in Derry. That statue, as fans of both the book and *IT Chapter Two* know, will be used to terrifying effect by Pennywise.****

- Lily James says she stops in her tracks "every time" she watches *Alien* due to her grandmother's involvement.

- James' grandma, the actress Helen Horton, voiced the computer known as Mother in Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi classic.

- The *Cinderella* star said she impressed Edgar Wright with her connection to Horton while making *Baby Driver*.

Get away from her, you… grandma?

Lily James recently reflected on her special connection to the original *Alien* movie during an interview with *The Independent*. Any time the *Cinderella* star watches Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi classic, she's treated to a familiar sound: Her grandmother, American actress Helen Horton, provided the voice of the computer known as Mother on board the spaceship Nostromo, where the majority of the film takes place.

"I was watching it recently because I was thinking of Sigourney Weaver as an inspiration for a role I was hoping to play," James explained. "And I do just stop in my tracks every time, like, 'My God, this is crazy, that's my grandma!'"

The *Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again* actress remains in awe of her grandmother's presence, even when playing a disembodied computer. "Her voice was magic," James recalled. "She had one of those beautiful, rich, almost-British voices that all of those iconic movie stars of that time had."

James also said she floored the director of her 2017 film *Baby Driver* by revealing her grandma's identity. "The only time I've really played that card was to impress Edgar Wright," she said. "Like, 'I don't know if you know, but my grandmother…' And being the biggest film obsessive, and having seen everything, he just thought it was *so cool*!"

(While undoubtedly an *Alien* nerd, Wright is also a noted fan of the 1974 horror movie *Phase IV*, which starred Horton and was the only feature film directed by legendary designer Saul Bass.)

Horton primarily worked in British television and theater. She starred in a student production of *Twelfth Night* with her friend, future Oscar winner Patricia Neal, while they were both studying at Northwestern University. She later took over as Blanche DuBois in the London production of *A Streetcar Named Desire* after Vivian Leigh departed the role.

Horton mostly played small supporting roles in her TV and film projects, though she shared the screen with a number of Hollywood icons throughout her career, including Eartha Kitt and Sidney Poitier in *The Mark of the Hawk*; Gregory Peck in *The Chairman*; Bill Murray in *The Razor's Edge*; Ann-Margret and Claudette Colbert in *The Two Mrs. Grenvilles*; and Michael Caine and Roger Moore in *Bullseye*. She also appeared in the 1983 sequel *Superman III*, starring Christopher Reeve in his third outing as the Man of Steel.

James previously told *Harper's Bazaar* that her grandmother loomed large in her family's consciousness. "She had such grace, and bone structure to die for, and an American accent that was so old-fashioned, it sounded English," she said in 2019. "The stories of her life as an actress were legendary in our family."

There has been a rich tradition of war movies since the silent days of the silver screen. Films in this genre can captivate our senses with sweeping battlefields and graphic depictions of combat, enlightening us with tales of triumph — and the worst humanity has to offer.

Modern films are especially able to bring the visceral imagery of century-old wars to life, such as in Oscar winners like *1917* (2019) and *All Quiet on the Western Front* (2022). Others use war to tell more expansive human stories and play in multiple genres, like *Da 5 Bloods* (2020).

Here are **'s recommendations for the best war movies streaming on Netflix right now.

George MacKay as Lance Corporal Schofield and Benedict Cumberbatch as Colonel Mackenzie in '1917'

In *1917*, director Sam Mendes fully engages the audience in the harrowing journey of a pair of British soldiers during World War I. Tasked with communicating an important message to a commander in person, lance corporals Will Schofield (George MacKay) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) navigate the chaos of the trenches and an onslaught of enemy fire.

Roger Deakins won an Oscar for his masterful cinematography, with long, unbroken takes, which, as **'s critic writes, "effectively drops the viewer into the center of the story and compels them to stay there, fully immersed in every muddy step, hunger pang, and rifle click." —*Kevin Jacobsen*

Albrecht Schuch as Stanislaus Katczinsky and Felix Kammerer as Paul Bäumer in 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. Netflix

The classic novel *All Quiet on the Western Front* has been adapted to film twice before, but this version by director Edward Berger is the first in the book's native German. Newcomer Felix Kammerer plays Paul Bäumer, a young German soldier who eagerly signs up to fight in World War I but gradually loses his innocence upon experiencing the hellishness of trench warfare.

Unlike the book and its previous adaptations, this version includes a storyline featuring the officials involved in ending the war. With stunning visuals and an ominous Oscar-winning score, EW's critic observes that *All Quiet on the Western Front* is "an antiwar drama that transcends the bombast of propaganda mostly just because it's so artfully and indelibly made." —*K.J.*

Beasts of No Nation (2015)

It's the film that started the Netflix original movie storm. *Beasts of No Nation*, directed by Cary Fukunaga, follows Abu (Abraham Attah), a child soldier fighting in a civil war in an unnamed African country. Idris Elba costars as the Commandant, a despotic leader who preys on Abu.

The movie gained the spotlight after many major theaters boycotted it over the rise of VOD, a fight of the past now. The cast is phenomenal, especially Elba, who terrifies and takes away the humanity of Abu. Despite the positive critical reception, *Beasts *earned no Academy Award nominations but remains a must-see. —*Robert English*

The Bombardment (2023)

Alex Høgh Andersen as Frederik in 'The Bombardment'

Alex Høgh Andersen as Frederik in 'The Bombardment'.

The Danish film *The Bombardment *— also known as* The Shadow in My Eye *— is based on true events. During World War II, the Royal Air Force (RAF) agreed to bomb a Gestapo headquarters located in Copenhagen. But when an accident leads to a local school also being mistaken for a target, the fates of Danish resistance fighters, children, and nuns collide.

The subject matter is challenging and director Ole Bornedal handles it gracefully, shooting his film beautifully, and treating his story's heroes and victims with respect. His contribution represents yet another important piece in the puzzle of World War II — a haunting film immortalizing a little-known story whose subjects deserve to be remembered. *—Ilana Gordon*

Da 5 Bloods (2020)

Delroy Lindo as Paul, Jonathan Majors as David, and Clarke Peters as Otis in 'Da 5 Bloods'

David Lee/Netflix

Spike Lee has already proven himself as a legend of the big screen, so it's no surprise that his tribute to Vietnam War veterans was another hit for the Oscar winner. *Da 5 Bloods* weaves the present and past as four vets return to Vietnam to seek the remains of their fallen squad leader (Chadwick Boseman in one of his final film roles) and their buried treasure.

The film manages to juggle two themes: the emotional toll on the soldiers and a conversation about race in the 1970s and America's role in the war. The result is stunning, with EW's critic calling the director "a filmmaker who remains in total control of his once-in-a-generation gifts and utilizes them to synthesize story and history into something new." —*R.E.*

The Forgotten Battle (2021)

Described as the "Dutch version of Dunkirk," *The Forgotten Battle* is a 2020 war drama directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Set in 1944 and centered around the Battle of the Scheldt during World War II, the movie follows a soldier in the Germany army (Gjis Blom), a Brtiish glider pilot (Jamie Flatters), and a Dutch woman (Susan Radder) who ends up fighting in the resistance.

When these three disparate characters find themselves on a collision course, their actions will have an impactful effect on the worldwide conflict. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

Andrew Garfield as Desmond T. Doss in 'Hacksaw Ridge'

Andrew Garfield as Desmond T. Doss in 'Hacksaw Ridge'. Mark Rogers

*Hacksaw Ridge* is a gripping war film whose protagonist is ironically a pacifist. Based on the true story of Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist who served as a combat medic during World War II and consciously refused to use a weapon, the film delves into his belief system leading up to and during the war, and his struggle to stay devoted to his cause.

Andrew Garfield earned an Oscar nomination for his earnest performance as Doss, and the film, while a smidge too sentimental in the home front first half, is riveting in its battle-heavy second. "The latter — a bone-rattling shock-and-awe of blasted limbs and spilled intestines," EW's critic writes, "is infinitely more affecting than the former." *—K.J.*

The Hurt Locker (2008)

Jeremy Renner as Staff Sergeant William James in 'The Hurt Locker'

Jeremy Renner as Staff Sergeant William James in 'The Hurt Locker'. Summit Entertainment

When your job requires you to disable bombs in the heat of battle, you suit up for work each day like it might be your last. In the second year of the Iraq War, Staff Sergeant James (Jeremy Renner) arrives to fill a vacancy in the Bravo Company, but finds that his unwillingness to communicate his plans and gonzo method of defusing bombs doesn't always jive with the rest of his company — especially Sergeant J. T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie).

From former reporter and screenwriter Mark Boal (*Zero Dark Thirty*) and director Kathryn Bigelow, whose work on this film made her the first woman to walk away with the Best Director Oscar, *The Hurt Locker* is realistic, intense, and action-packed, chronicling the many effects war has on the people who fight it. As EW's critic at the time says, "This ain't no war videogame, no flashy, cinematic art piece; there's nothing virtual about this reality." *—I.G.*

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Brad Pitt at Lt. Aldo Raine (right) in 'Inglourious Basterds'. Francois Duhamel/TWC

Quentin Tarantino's take on a World War II action film, *Inglourious Basterds*, presents an alternate version of the conflict as told through two parallel plots to assassinate Hitler. The first assassination is planned by the "Basterds," a unit of Jewish American soldiers led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) who are known for their legendary Nazi killing abilities. The second plot is architected by Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent), a Jewish woman living undercover in France after surviving an encounter with SS Officer Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), a.k.a. "the Jew Hunter."

The action is brutal and bloody, the dialogue is filled with that signature Quentin quip, and the ensemble cast is lousy with standouts. Waltz is chief among them, and his performance of the genteel and charismatic Nazi psychopath rightfully earned him the Best Supporting Oscar trophy at that year's Academy Awards. *—I.G.*

Jarhead (2005)

Jake Gyllenhaal as Anthony Swofford in 'Jarhead'

Jake Gyllenhaal as Anthony Swofford in 'Jarhead'.

Universal Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection

Adapted from Anthony Swofford's 2003 memoir, *Jarhead* is a movie about the mundanity of modern warfare. Swofford, played here by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a Marine sniper who is deployed to the Arabian Peninsula as part of Operation Desert Shield. Desperate for action, he and his unit are sidelined waiting for their assignment, forced to stew in their frustration, fear, and boredom.

Far from glorifying the battlefield, *Jarhead* paints the Marine experience as one of tedium and anxiety, loneliness and machismo-one-upmanship. Gyllenhaal is excellent as the battle-starved Swofford, and director Sam Mendes manages to make a compelling war movie with almost no action. EW's critic writes, "*Jarhead* is an existential docudrama: cool and funny, vivid and remote at the same time."* —I.G.*

Where to watch *Jarhead*: Netflix

**Director: **Sam Mendes

**Cast: **Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Lucas Black, Jamie Foxx

The King (2019)

Timothée Chalamet as Hal/Henry V in 'The King'

Timothée Chalamet as Hal/Henry V in 'The King'.

William Shakespeare's plays *Henry IV* and *Henry V* take the backseat for a new look at the wartorn and political landscape of Henry V's rise to power. Timothée Chalamet stars as the young king, bowl-cut and all, as he navigates the fight for the crown across feudal England and France. Chalamet and costar Robert Pattinson are the film's standouts, with eccentric looks and passionate monologues.

The action is gritty, "a series of grand battleground set pieces," EW's critic cites, recalling images of *Game of Thrones*' Battle of the Bastards. And according to Chalamet, these war scenes and duels are suffocating and intense, "properly messy and dangerous." —*R.E.*

Set in war-torn Mosul, this Arabic-language war movie centers on the skirmishes fought between an Iraqi SWAT team and ISIS insurgents during the 2016 Battle of Mosul. After 21-year-old police officer Kawa survives an ISIS attack, he agrees to accompany a SWAT team on their quest to free Mosul from militants. As Kawa navigates the ravaged city and fights alongside the other officers, he struggles to find answers to his questions about the purposes of the SWAT team's secret mission. **

Inspired by a 2017 article about the battle within Iraq to destroy ISIS, *Mosul *premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, and received positive feedback for offering a new perspective on the violence in the region. *Munich — The Edge of War* is a fictional accounting of a pivotal historical period. Based on Robert Harris' bestselling novel, the film follows two old college friends — Hugh Legat, a British civil servant, and Paul von Hartmann, a German diplomat — as they find themselves drawn into the center of Europe's political powder keg.

A good, old-fashioned spy story with deep stakes, the film examines Neville Chamberlain's (Jeremy Irons) role in the time leading up to World War II in a new light. Seven months after World War II began, a small town in Norway found itself in Hitler's crosshairs. Narvik was rich in the iron ore the German army required for its many wartime needs, and for 62 days in the spring of 1940, the Norwegians and Allied forces attempted to repel a German invasion.

A little-known Norwegian historical film that gives a human face to the Battles of Narvik, *Narvik *follows Corporal Gunnar Tofte, his wife Ingrid, and their son Ole as the three struggle to survive the German attack. The movie presents a fascinating look at the ethical negotiations required by both soldiers and civilians during war, and the performances and cinematography are especially excellent. *—I.G.*

Philip Helgar as Edvard Tallaksen in 'Number 24'.

There's no better representative of Norway's World War II resistance movement than Gunnar Fridtjof Thurmann Sønsteby — or "Agent No. 24" as he is known to the Gestapo agents hunting him. The recipient of Norway's highest military decoration, Gunnar's story as a leader in Norway's fight to sabotage their German occupiers is told across parallel timelines.

In the present, Gunnar (Erik Hivju) is Norway's greatest war hero, asked to give a presentation to school children about his activities during the war. The film then flashes back to his time as a 25-year-old (played by Sjur Vatne Brean) deciding to join the resistance. Director John Andreas Andersen toggles between these two realities, using a question and answer session with his student audience to unlock the secret drawer of memories that Gunnar struggles to keep shut tight. A terse war thriller and tribute to one of Norway's bravest and most successful resistance fighters, *Number 24 *is must-see reminder of what it looks like to fight fascism at all ages. *—I.G.*

What do you get when you combine two former Mr. Darcys and a war drama? You get *Operation Mincemeat* starring Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen, based on real events that took place during World War II. **

Without giving too much away, imagine what it would look like if James Bond writer Ian Fleming helped the British Army to pass misinformation to the Nazis intended to convey a plan to invade Greece. Add in a love triangle and some high-stakes wartime strategy, and you have a story so absurdly engaging, it's hard to remember that it's true. This medieval war drama transports us back to the early 1300s in Scotland, where Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine) gradually ascends to King of Scots. Hoping to free Scotland from England's tyranny, he leads his country in battle against the English army.

While not groundbreaking in its approach, *Outlaw King* is a reliably bloody (and muddy) epic full of heavy skirmishes. Director David Mackenzie "films it beautifully in the natural light of candles, torches, and overcast skies," writes EW's critic, "and there's a solidness to the old-fashioned conventions of his storytelling." —*K.J.*

The screenwriter behind *Saving Private Ryan* and the director behind *Independence Day* team up for *The Patriot*, an epic action film set during the Revolutionary War. Mel Gibson stars as a former war hero forced back onto the battlefield and into *Taken *mode after one of his sons (played by Heath Ledger) is captured by the British.

A singularly turn-of-the-century blockbuster, *The Patriot* is ultranationalistic, eschewing historical realities in favor of extended battle sequences and heavy production value. However, EW's critic at the time writes that the movie's "second hour, in which father and son come to know each other as men through word and deed, carries far more weight than any way cool shot of a cannonball carrying off a soldier's head." *—I.G.*

World history since 1945 has created several opportunities for crises to transform into World War III, and one of those incidents took place in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the early '60s. A true story you've probably never heard, *The Siege of Jadotville* follows an Irish company led by Cmdr. Pat Quinlan (Jamie Dornan) deployed to keep the peace in the region after the execution of the Congolese Prime Minister portends civil war.

When a U.N. attack against the capitol prompts retaliation against the Irish forces, Quinlan and his men are forced to repel the attackers, but find themselves outnumbered and without reinforcements. One of World War II's lesser-known stories is the heroic tale of the Six Triple Eight. During the conflict, the 6888 was the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas. Their mission was to improve morale by establishing a functional postal service capable of delivering three years' worth of backlogged mail to troops and their loved ones.

Tyler Perry adapts and directs the true story of the Central Postal Directory Battalion into a dramatic and inspirational war movie. Kerry Washington stars as Maj. Charity Adams, the unflinching leader who battles racism and low expectations to do her duty and do right by her fellow soldiers. There are many excellent movies about the Iraq War, but *Thank You for Your Service* doesn't focus on the conflict. An adaptation of a non-fiction book about veterans returning from service and reintegrating into society, the film investigates the role PTSD and broken bureaucratic systems play in soldiers' lives after discharge.

Miles Teller stars as Sgt. Adam Schumann, a husband and father of two who is struggling to process his trauma and guilt. EW's critic writes that the movie is "successful at capturing the Iraq War's effects on American lives," and praises Teller's performance, stating that "in many ways Adam is still just a boy in man's clothes." *—I.G.*

*Unbroken* chronicles the real-life story of Olympic distance runner Louis Zamperini and his harrowing survival during World War II. Zamperini was on a search-and-rescue mission in 1943 when his plane experienced engine failure and crashed in the ocean, leaving him stranded at sea with two crewmates for weeks. Japanese sailors captured him and he subsequently was made a prisoner of war.

Jack O'Connell gives a hypnotic performance as Zamperini and director Angelina Jolie's production is handsomely mounted, netting Oscar nominations for its cinematography and sound. —*K.J.*

War Machine (2017)

A satirical war comedy that EW's critic calls a "smart, sharp spitball of a film," *War Machine *spoofs the United States' conflict in Afghanistan. Loosely inspired by a 2010 article profiling the military leader responsible for commanding America's forces in the region, *War Machine *stars Brad Pitt as a fictitious character named Gen. Glen McMahon who has been personally assigned by President Obama to lead America's war efforts.

McMahon believes the war can be won, but struggles to get the troops he needs to complete the task. Pitt leads an accomplished cast of comedic and character actors, and while the film's satire doesn't always accomplish its goal, the performances make up for the movie's uneven moments. —*I.G.*
