- Five-time Oscar-winning composer John Williams has an issue with modern movie music.

- The *Jurassic Park *conductor said that new movie music "usually isn't" good.

- Williams has won Academy Awards for his work on *Schindler's List*, *E.T.*, and more.

Modern movie scores have struck the wrong chord with five-time Oscar-winning *Star Wars*, *Jaws*, *E.T. *and *Schindler's List* composer John Williams.

The legendary *Jurassic Park* musician recently spoke out against contemporary compositions that appear in Hollywood productions, with the 93-year-old suggesting in a new interview with *The Guardian* that he often doesn't care for arrangements that appear in major blockbusters of today.

"I never liked film music very much," he admitted to the publication, indicating that movie music often doesn't compare to standalone works of music made outside the confines of cinema.**

He continued, saying that, "Film music, however good it can be — and it usually isn't, other than maybe an eight-minute stretch here and there... I just think the music isn't there."

Williams added that "what we think of as this precious great film music is" just viewers "remembering it in some kind of nostalgic way," with relation to how the pieces made audiences feel when paired with emotional scenes or exciting happenings on the big screen.

"Just the idea that film music has the same place in the concert hall as the best music in the canon is a mistaken notion, I think," Williams said. "A lot of [film music] is ephemeral. It's certainly fragmentary and, until somebody reconstructs it, it isn't anything that we can even consider as a concert piece."

Though he's not particularly fond of movie music in comparison to the great orchestral masterworks of history, Williams' contributions to the medium have made a lasting imprint in the industry.

Williams' 54 total Oscar nominations mark the second-highest tally since the Academy Awards began, with only Walt Disney accumulating more total nods than Williams.

Films Williams has won Oscars for working on include *Fiddler on the Roof*, *Jaws*, *Star Wars*, *E.T.*, and *Schindler's List*.

Though Williams' legendary* Jurassic Park *score didn't receive the same kind of recognition from the Oscars, his legacy is still felt in the series to this day, as *Jurassic World Rebirth *musician Alexandre Desplat recently exclusively told * *he wanted to pay tribute to Williams as he took over as the franchise's composer.

"Every score John Williams has written has become an iconic score, so it's quite a daunting task," Desplat said. "At first, you're excited, then panic comes along because you realize that you're taking over from a fabulous composer who invented so many great things that the whole planet knows. You try to find your way through that."**

Outside of his work in film, Williams was interviewed for a rare biographical book on his life and work, *John Williams: A Composer's Life*, which is set to be released in September.
